Gino Viotti (1877 - 1951) was an Italian actor in silent and sound cinema. He also was a lecturer in make up and make up artist.
Born in Turin, Italy, Viotti’s basic activity in the film world was playing second fiddle, so supporting roles. He started acting in film around 1920, probably first in the film Follie/Madness (Enrico Roma 1920) starring Tullio Carminati and Linda Moglia. Next came Nemesis (Carmine Gallone 1920) with Soava Gallone, La scimitarra di Barbarossa (Mario Corsi 1921) with Lina Millefleurs, Marcella (Gallone 1921) again with Soava Gallone, Sterminator Veseva (Giorgio Mannini 1921), La donna nuda (Roberto Roberti 1922) with Francesca Bertini and Angelo Ferrari, and La gerla di papà Martin (Mario Bonnard 1923). Viotti was Monclair in the Elena Sangro vehicle Triboulet (Febo Mari 1923), he played the leacherous and treacherous Greek Chilo Chilonides in the epic film Quo vadis? (Gabriellino D’Annunzio/ Georg Jacoby 1925) starring Emil Jannings as Nero, he was the old marquis in the Francesca Bertini vehicle, the Faustian tale La giovinezza del diavolo (Roberti 1925), and also performed in another Bertini vehicle, Fior di levante (Roberti 1925). In 1927 Viotti played the politician Giuseppe Mazzini in the Anita Garbaldi biopic Anita, o il romanzo d’amore dell’eroe dei due mondi (Aldo de Benedetti) starring Rina de Liguoro. He also performed in two regionalistic films by Gian Orlando Vassallo: Risa e lacrime napoletane (1926) and El moroso della nona (1927). His last silent films were Valle santa (Mario Gargiulo 1928), Mario Camerini’s desert tale Kif tebbi (1929), and Maratona (Nicola Fausto Neroni 1929).
In the sound era Viotti continued his acting, performing in many films of the 1930s. He was a.o. the mayor in the comedy Figaro e la sua gran giornata (Camerini 1931), Gano in Palio (Alessandro Blasetti 1932), the singing master in La cantante dell’opera (Nunzio Malasomma 1932) with isa Pola and Germana Paolieri, the old man with the bow tie in Treno popolare (Raffaele Matarazzo 1933), the employee of the cars association in Piccola mia (Eugenio de Liguoro 1933) with Germana Paolieri, again the mayor in Vecchia guardia (Blasetti 1934), a teacher in Seconda B (Goffredo Alessandrini 1934), the maestro Zingarelli in Casta diva (Gallone 1935) starring Martha Eggerth, and the hotel director in Una donna tra due mondi (Alessandrini 1936) starring Isa Miranda. In the epic film Scipione l'africano (1937) by Carmine Gallone he played a Phenician merchant, while in Luis Trenker’s Condottieri (1937) he played the pope, who is the only one who can stop the wild condottiere Giovanni (played by Trenker himself). Small parts Viotti had in a.o. Pietro Micca (Aldo Vergano 1938), Giuseppe Verdi (Gallone 1938), Il sogno di Butterfly (Gallone 1939), Piccolo hotel (Piero Ballerini 1939), and Enrico Guazzoni’s comedy Il re di denari (1940), starring Angelo Musco. Viotti last film role was an uncredited part as an old tenant in Vittorio De Sica’s melodrama I bambini ci guardano/Children Are Watching Us (1943), starring Luciano De Ambrosis, Isa Pola and Emilio Cigoli. When the Roman theatre academy started in 1936, Viotti was teaching in make up. As lecturer, he also contributed to the make up of various plays, such as D’Annunzio’s Francesca da Rimini (1937), directed by Renato SImoni. In 1950 Viotti published a book on the topic, simply called: Il trucco, edited by A.V.E. Gino Viotti died on 22 December 1951 in Rome.
