## Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) Reviews
  ### 1. Reliable, Flexible, and Backed by a Team That Cares

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian L. | Instructional Media Technicial (Equipment Room Manager), Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 10, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Shelf has completely transformed how we manage equipment in our Cinema Department at Los Angeles City College. After testing other platforms like Snipe-IT and Cheqroom, Shelf stood out as the perfect balance of features, fair pricing, and flexibility without the risk of being locked into a vendor that could raise prices year after year.

What I value most is how much the team cares about their users. Carlos has been amazing at listening to feedback and rolling out updates quickly. Bugs I have reported were often fixed in a day or two, which is rare for any software platform.

On the functional side, importing assets through CSV was simple and the team even provided pre-assigned QR IDs, allowing us to design our own custom equipment tags. That alone saved us thousands of dollars compared to buying pre-made tags, and gave us the ability to include helpful details like contact information, item names, and serial numbers.

The availability view has been a game changer for day-to-day operations. We went from having zero clarity about what gear was in circulation to being able to see exactly when items are due back through a simple calendar interface. It has made communicating with students about equipment availability so much easier.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

The main area that could be improved is the student-facing checkout experience. Right now, assets are listed individually, which means if we have 20 Canon T7 cameras, they appear 20 times instead of once with a quantity of 20. It works, but it is not the most intuitive experience for students.

I would love to see the front end evolve into more of a “storefront with a cart” approach, where students could select gear more naturally and reserve it themselves. I have already spoken with Carlos about this idea, and knowing how responsive the team is, I am optimistic that improvements like this are on the horizon.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before Shelf, we had no clear way of knowing what equipment was available, who had it checked out, or when it was coming back. Everything was tracked manually, which led to confusion, lost gear, and constant back-and-forth with students. Shelf solved this by giving us a centralized system that manages our entire inventory, streamlines checkouts, and provides a calendar view of availability.

This has completely improved communication with students and staff, reduced mistakes, and saved us countless hours of manual tracking. On top of that, the ability to import assets in bulk and generate our own custom QR-coded tags has saved our department thousands of dollars while making our system more professional and reliable.

  ### 2. A great open-source solution to asset management

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gruff V. | Co-CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 15, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

This app does a great job of the often complex task of asset management, no matter what your assets are (we're a video production company with in-house kit and various physical resources). The UI is modern and clear, and the features are just what we needed; add in a bunch of assets and their metadata, create kits, then be able to book them out across multiple users. We've not implemented QR codes yet, but we'll be rolling our own stickers for this very soon. The ability to simply use the phone in your pocket instead of some expensive scanner handset is great.

Being open-source, the ability to fork your own version and build out your own features on top of the great work the Shelf team have done so far is super useful if you can't wait for features your organisation needs to be implemented (obviously you'll need dev experience for this, it's not straightforward if you're not a developer).

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Honestly not that much to say here. The first thing we needed to implement in our self-hosted version was for kits to have a "kit value" based on the value of all the assets added to the kit. Felt like an obvious requirement, but it was easy for us to implement ourselves with a bit of code.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a video production company, we have a lot of in-house production kit (cameras, lenses, cables, batteries etc) as well as laptops and other devices. We even use Shelf to book out vehicles and rooms. It helps us assign assets to people, and book out kit that's shared across the company.

  ### 3. An effective and simple asset tracking system

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bill C. | Director of I.T. and Business Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 25, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Shelf is simple and is a great fit for the current state of technology. Our needs are based around employee computers and equipment. Many asset systems do a whole log of things that I don't need. When was the last time I needed to know the number of cylinders on a users hard drive. I don't. If we need details we can dive into Intune to pull them. Shelf focuses on the key elements... who has what, how much its worth, where it is, and how do you track it. It just works... it works on the computer and on our phones. Aside from the core settings, you have custom tags available to you.

The software really has no problems I have seen. Moving on to the team... there is support on discord and the team at the company. They were fantastic on helping us figure out how to leverage the tags, categories, etc to fit our needs before we purchased. I needed some data not exposed in the UI recently, it took about 1 business day to get a custom export. Questions are often answered quicker - but I can't think of any longer. For what it's worth, they all have been just nice people, who really like the users and want the product to be selected.

We are in the midrange... maybe 1,500 devices we track... and its been fine. We also have SSO integration with Azure AD working just fine. One other nice thing is the QR code asset tags... if you scan them and are not logged in it brings you to a "Did you find this device, let me help you contact the owner", which is just a damn nice to have feature.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Because shelf focuses on simplicity, you may find yourself rethinking your process to fit into the tag / category / booking. The team was instrumental in helping us work through that.

My only other complaint is the lack of API's to retrieve or work with data. 99% of groups would not need this though.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We need to track our assets... who has what. Shelf makes that easy.

  ### 4. Simple but powerful Asset Management

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Toby L. | IT Deskside Supervisor, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Shelf is very easy to use, my team all have smart phones so scanning the QR codes and updating asset details on the fly makes tracking the 1000's of pieces of equipment we have child's play.
The software is very flexible so I have functionality and can adapt inbuilt systems in ways I wouldn't be able to do with standard conventional asset management software.
The support from Nikolay and Carlos has been exceptional, not only when things go wrong but they also welcome ideas of features to add to the software that they may not have thought of themselves.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

As the software is still being developed there's some QOL functionality that's not currently implemented but the Devs have made it clear that they will be implementing the missing systems in future releases.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have a workforce that can be working at home as well as in the office and this can change regularly.

Shelf has 2 options that help us with this. When the time period that the member of staff will have the equipment is unknown we can assign the equipment to the user by a simple scan of the attached QR code, and once returned another quick scan to unassign the device. If there is a specific time period that the user will be working from home we can 'Book' the devices out the the user which will set up automatic reminder emails when the device is due back.

Both these methods has massively improved our ability to be able to account for every asset in and out of the workplace.

  ### 5. The best app for managing inventory

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alec E. | IT Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 11, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

In terms of an inventory management solution, we were hard pressed to find any other app that combined a great UI the various features that Shelf has. Shelf also has a very active community and team behind it which made the switch very easy for us. We continue to find new things to love about Shelf every day. It just works and looks great. We never spend any time having to fight with the tool.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Absolutely no downsides. If you have any issues you can reach out to the team via discord and they usually fix it within a couple days. Any requests for features also seem to be added to the roadmap very quickly. The community around the product has been really well developed.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Through Shelf we are able to gain an overview of our inventory.

  ### 6. Shelf for Drone Assets

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nate R. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 20, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Shelf asset display is highly customizable allowing user to store and update data with ease. This is very helpful for aircraft maintenance and dispatching compliance.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

As a limitation, it is difficult to "embed" existing systems into shelf (such as maintenance records, etc) to use shelf as the central information repository.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Shelf is the central repository for all of our University's Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (drones), sensors, supporting equipment, and maintenance supplies. Additionally, Shelf is being used as a compliance took to track equipment maintenance needs through asset reminders and asset custodian tracking for a growing number of users/pilots.

  ### 7. Amazing asset management tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Johannes v. | Technical Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 13, 2025

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

It makes insights in our asset very easy. Bookings dont overlap anymore. The Shelf team responds to requests and implements them. We use it on a daily basis.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Not much. Its still a work in progres. But very workable

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We had a lot of double bookings. this is solved. Also for the repair of assets is more structured now.

  ### 8. Exceptional tool for organizing and sharing knowledge efficiently

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 23, 2024

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Shelf's strength is organization. Create topic-based collections for research, notes, or knowledge bases. Team up? Share collections for project collaboration or family knowledge exchange. Easy to use interface makes information management accessible. Customization options (formatting, visuals, layouts) could be a big win for those who like organized info presented their way. At 104 words, this captures Shelf's core appeal.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Shelf's limitations are unclear without testing it myself. Potentially, open shelves might lack privacy for sensitive collections. Search functionality within collections could be limited for complex info. Without advanced features, power users might find it restrictive.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Shelf tackles the issue of information overload by providing a central hub to organize and categorize knowledge. This saves time searching for specifics and streamlines information retrieval. It also fosters collaboration by allowing users to share collections, which benefits teams working on projects or families exchanging information. Finally, Shelf can improve learning and research by centralizing notes and resources, making it easier to build knowledge bases and review information

  ### 9. Powerful but simple equipment management software! Love it so far!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Floris W. | Owner, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 11, 2023

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

I have been looking for a modern asset management software for my companies equipment, the usage of QR codes of shelf is very clever, as most of my staff has a smart phone with them at all times. So they can interact with the labels, make work order requests, tag equipment and so on.

Another handy thing of working with shelf, is that they have a production workflow for creating asset tags and delivering them to your door. We used this service and produced 1000 asset tags that are unlinked to items. This means that, if new equipment or inventory arrives, we can quickly create its digital version.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Something I see as a negative, is that shelf works in a singular user environment. Meaning that, I can have 1 admin for the asset inventory. From my talks with shelf, they say that, soon they will integrate the concept of organisations. This will allow me to load more colleagues to my account.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Bring order into all the tools and assets in our company. While growing, its too easy too loose track of everything but shelf makes it easy to bring some order into the chaos of a fast-growing company.

  ### 10. Incredible Company

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Broadcast Media | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2023

**What do you like best about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

When we first discovered Shelf, we sought something different from your standard asset management software. We needed software that fit our specific preferences, and as soon as we contacted Carlos, he was with us every step of the way and accommodated all our requests. Shelf listens to its users and is getting better every day.

**What do you dislike about Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu)?**

Due to Shelf being in early development, some features have yet to be implemented. Shelf, however, is an incredibly user-friendly approach to asset tracking and is constantly being updated every week.

**What problems is Shelf Asset Management (Shelf.nu) solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Shelf still being in the early stages; the developers are eager to listen to its current user base and are always available for meetings and questions. Recently we've talked about implementing a "Locations" feature, and within a few weeks, it's almost ready to launch. The developers are incredibly hard-working and always looking for ways to improve their creation.
