BOMs Away - QOV March

So y’all know from the past couple of months that I have, like, five or six Quilts of Valor sitting around just waiting for binding, right? So naturally, this month, I…didn’t bind any of them. Or quilt anything new. Or put a border on the top I finished last month.

So what did I do?

If you guessed started a totally new project, you’re right! (And I’m totally predictable.)

To be fair, I planned on starting this one - it’s Quilty Girl’s annual mystery, and she’s really good at writing easy patterns perfectly sized and colored for QOVF. (But Kate, you have a Quilty Girl Mystery in your stack of quilts to bind! Sssh, I know, I know.)

Naturally, it’s all stash, because my QOVF stash is out of control. I sorted two boxes of fabric and cut up anything that fit her instructions. (Which - she’s using a technique for the rail pieces that I know about but never used, and it makes the cutting super easy since everything - HST, rectangles - all start from the same size.)

But we really need to get to the dark blue portion soon, because that stack…

And seriously - I’m going to get stuff bound this month and more quilted. The state coordinator is coming up some time in April to do a ceremony, and I want to pass along a stack of finished quilts. (And she’s bringing me more, I just know it!)

And so… Did anyone else work on (or start) a BOM? Or a project broken into more manageable monthly pieces? Or a few blocks for someone else’s charity project? Link up here or at What a Hoot!

Paperworld Stars - a Finished Quilt!

Guess what? It’s another nerdy quilt! And it’s Disney - another super shocking fact! I mean, it could be Pokemon. And it will be Pokemon next week. But this week, it’s all about the heroes and princesses!

This is Backstitch custom fabrics, mixed with some Art Gallery basics. Art Gallery has a similar hand to custom fabrics, so they’re well suited to hang out together!

This Backstitch release only had six panels, so I had to dip into my yardage as well to make enough stars. And it’s directional, which meant I had to plan in advance to get everything facing the right way. Ugh - PLANNING. But I got it all right and it looks fabulous!

The backing is a flannel rainbow dot that ISN’T Wilmington Bubbles! (I know, right? It’s only because they haven’t decided to make it in flannel.) The binding is Art Gallery Honeycomb, leftover from the runDisney quilt. Using it right up!

BOMs Away - RSC March

And what a delightful time to play with my green scraps! It’s right after St Patrick’s Day, I’m using greens for my next Nerd Naps stuff, and the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is also green! Of course, I promptly forgot which green we were supposed to use, so I went with darker greens. (Spoiler alert: I was right.)

This is a lot of scraps from my favorite quilts! There’s a good bit of the outdoorsy fabric from my bestie’s bear paw, and lots of the green from my log cabin wreath. And I’m slowly adding in new grays with the strip pieced sets I made the first month.

It looks a bit out of place, but I think that’s because the first two blocks were very light. Hopefully they’ll even out over time. I’m still enjoying making them (even with all those tiny pieces) so that’s all that matters!

A Quilt Has No Name - a Finished T-Shirt Quilt!

So this one is for my sister, and since she’s my sister, I can tease her for refusing to name the quilt, right? Other names considered: This Is the Quilt That Has No Name (to the tune of This Is the Song That Does Not End) or This Quilt Who Shall Remain Nameless. But, obviously I went with the Game of Thrones reference from when GOT was almost still a good show.

It’s a mix of her college and high school shirts, because sometime around our 20th reunions is when we start realizing we can’t wear the high school senior shirts any more.

The dark blue Virginia shirt in that pieced square was actually a baby onesie! From our kids. My sister didn’t know she wanted to go to UVa when she was a baby, obvi.

Obviously she went to the University of Virginia and that influenced her color choices. Both sashing and cornerstones/binding are Batik by Mirah. Quilting is loops in my favorite steel-blue-gray Omni thread.

This is my favorite little block - that’s our high school swim team sweatpants and fleece, our town swim team towel, and the front of the senior shirt. First time using a towel!

The backing is more UVa fabric, which fun story - so I was shopping for this at the height of the pandemic mask making last summer. You know, when stores were limiting these kinds of prints to 1-2 yard purchases and my usual supplier was running out of everything licensed faster than they could get it in. So I had to beg a seller to let me have four yards of this print of a backing…and then I ended up not finishing this quilt until now so I could have waited and it wouldn’t have been an issue.
