WiP - May

May was mostly smaller finishes, but that's because the bigger finishes are coming. I'm working on three epic-ly sized t-shirt quilts, with close to 70 shirts in each. Two are actually ready to be bound, but as they'll all be shipped together, it hasn't been a priority. So - the big finishes are coming! Soon! And then don't be surprised because they were a while in the making.

Anyway, the finishes! California Girl / Wildflower Log Cabin / Fourth of July Hexies / Dog Sled stuff / It All Started With a Mouse- and a bonus Pixelated Heart is ready for cleanup and a photoshoot for Friday.

The tops! Greenery, Dog Sled, my sister's wedding quilt {my OMG goal!}

The quilted! Two epic t-shirt quilts and Bear Paw {okay, so I hid the first epic t-shirt quilt in a box to keep CC off it and didn't bother taking it out....and Bear Paw isn't even off the zippers yet. But hey, quilted is a step!}

For my OMG goal for June, the one thing I should really finish is the double four patch top. {I mean, there's a ton of stuff I have to do - see: epic t-shirt quilts - but I also need fun piecing on the side!} I cut most of it already, so it'll just take some free time to play instead of work. Its border is my tutorial for Confessions of a Fabric Addict's Christmas in July, so...it has to be a flimsy soon!

So that was May, and I still have just about two weeks of school left to keep pushing through June. I'm quilting every single week! And of course, all the moving stuff starts soon, too. By the end of June, we should have a firm plan, and then in July we execute it. In theory. I've moved with the military enough to know how plans actually work. So I'm still just trying to get through the stuff I can control before we get to the stage where I can't.

BOMs Away - Memorial Day Floating Stars

  Don't look so surprised - I planned for Floating Stars to be on Memorial Day. Goodness, they are such an enjoyable project to work on throughout the month. I could make this my Quilts of Valor project forever.

Such an easy leader/ender to have around. It's super fast to cut another round of background squares and focal fabric, and uses up a decent chunk of both. I'm moving right through my exceptionally-patriotic-background yardage. I did make the mistake of using directional fabric for the newest ones {still being an ender on my machine} so I've had to pay a bit more attention to that one.

At this point, I only need about five more blocks to finish two tops. I'm thinking scrappy RWB sashing with cornerstones from all the leftover background squares. I'll be handing them off to our local Quilts of Valor coordinator just before we move, which will be perfect! Then I have all those corner cutoffs to play with...

It All Started With a Mouse - a Finished T-Shirt Quilt

  Oh, one of my favorite kinds of t-shirt quilts! All Disney, all the time!

This client said she liked my grid designs, but had too many shirts {and design sizes} to do it the traditional way. So, I came up with a grid-like puzzle design.

I think it came out well! It was a lot of fun adding in that skinny row of runDisney logos. And all those Tower of Terror shirts! That was my very first Disney race back in 2007, and I'm still very bitter that my shirt didn't have "inaugural" on it. Especially now that the race is defunct. {I just realized that will be ten years ago this October. Don't care. STILL BITTER.}

For quilting, she asked for loops and hearts and...

...OF COURSE THERE'S HIDDEN MICKEYS.

The binding, well, she said she liked pink and grey when we were discussing the backing. I hopped on fabric.com, searched for pink and grey, and this Michael Miller stripe popped up. And I pretty much decided I was going to use it no matter what the client thought, because look how perfect it is! I'm not sure I would have ever stumbled across this in a store, so thank goodness for narrowing down online searches!

I forgot to take a full backing shot, but she debated a couple options for a few days before asking me to pick. This was her first choice, but she thought it may be too pink. I don't believe in "too" anything - especially for backing - so flannel pink Minnies FTW! And you can continue to admire that perfect binding.

And the name, of course, is a Walt Disney quote. Appropriate!

BOMs Away - Greenery {Again}

  Since I had my green bin out earlier this month, I found myself cutting out a few extra strips and squares. And then a few more. And then I dove into my pinks, since Flamingo is the Kona color of the year, and I knew pink and green played together well after my Abstract Watermelon. Green and pink happen to be the scrap bins that I can't get the lid on, so...

...before I knew it, I had a top! Well, maybe. I made a top. It's 35" square, and I could easily toss borders on it now and declare it a perfectly fine baby quilt.

But...it doesn't feel done. And my pink and green scrap bins are still overflowing. And there's plenty of pieces in those bins that haven't made it into this quilt. {Each fabric is only used twice, as an inside square or an outer box.}

So, for the purposes of the Greenery Challenge, this is a top. Woohoo! For the purposes of me, it might grow a few blocks.

{Or I'll put it in a box, forget about it, find it in five years, and then come to the decision that I should have given up at baby quilt size. You know. Whichever.}

And that's what I did with my "extra" Block of the Month Monday in May.  How about you? Link up here or at What a Hoot!
