Mama Rocked - A Finished Mini Quilt!

So as a quick distraction in between t-shirt quilts, my infamous photographer Lori asked me to make a mini quilt for her mother’s birthday. A mini quilt of a mini guitar, to be exact. I didn’t know a ukulele was basically a tiny guitar, but now I do and so do you!

I took some pictures before I sent it off, but Lori had a ukulele on hand and was able to take pictures with a prop, which is obviously the only thing that makes her photos better than mine.

I used a modified pattern from Electric Quilt - basically, I didn’t like their cutting instructions to piece it on point from the start, so I redesigned it to piece it straight up and down and then turn it on point. Mostly I eliminated bias edges and odd shaped scraps from just chopping off chunks at the ends.

Mmm, wow, okay, I guess there’s a TAD BIT of difference in our photos. So this is just to show how much better Lori is at her job the corner tabs that I inserted to make it easy to hang the mini quilt.

The quilting is the awesome Music Notes that I used last week on a marching band t-shirt quilt, and you can find it on my longarm page if you want it on your own quilt! It’s a great pattern that stitches out neatly both big and small.

Fabric was mostly scraps, with some of my favorite basics, crosshatch in blue and gray. The backing is Kona Natural.

Paul's Memories - A Finished T-Shirt Quilt

So this was a random bit of requesting! Back in Oklahoma, someone asked me to do a quilt repair. I don’t do them very often, but I agreed and was able to fix it. (Luckily it wasn’t vintage or hand pieced, just sentimental with a few dog nibbles.) A few years later, she’s also moving from Oklahoma, and she found a box of her son’s shirts. Well, obviously, you know what we do with shirts around here!

So it’s a good mix of elementary through high school, with some Boy Scouts and band and sports shirts as well. Two different elementary school artwork shirts that actually held up quite well! She asked for puzzle style, with the front and backs near each other when both are used.

This is just adorable - a Hooter’s shirt signed by several waitresses. Since their signatures went up near the collar, I removed it and stitched it down to a piece of the bottom of the shirt so it still made an easy-to-use square. (Well, it’s a rectangle, but who’s nitpicking??)

The quilting is musical notes (shown here on a band shirt, naturally) and yes, I actually remembered to add it to my longarm page! I got it for next week’s secret finish, so be prepared to see it again…in miniature form!

Borders and backing: Timeless Treasures Aurora Trees (and yes they are properly directionally orientated around the quilt and back)

Binding: Monet Marble Batik

Oklahoma - a Quilt Pattern Refresh

Okay, so this one has been hiding in the quilt pattern refresh bin for so long that I haven’t actually lived in Oklahoma for almost two years now! Most of the directions for alternate sizes were written out for our quilt guild’s retreat in summer of 2020. But, you know, life. It happens and all that.

But! Now the baby size is finished and the pattern is completely refreshed and ready for you! I took the guild’s advice and knocked off two rows of background fabric to make the mini and baby sizes square, and added a fifth option using 2.5” strips. (So get out those jelly rolls!)

Since I made the original version in orange and white, I had to make the baby size in crimson and cream. Not showing any college preference here! I actually made the graphics in orange and crimson so no one could accuse me of playing favorites. (I actually don’t even have a favorite - really!)

For the quilting, I chose Wind Swirls. Because it’s Oklahoma…and the wind comes sweeping down the plains…

For this version, I used scraps (obviously) but you can find Oklahoma fabric here. The backing is a red and white buffalo plaid and the binding is a red and white gingham…yes, that’s a lot of checks and a lot of red and white! What can I say, I like a theme.

Scrapamath - 7 & 8

2-4-6-8, who do we appreciate it? Okay, that was my last chance for that one. Sorry not sorry. It’s Scrapamath day and we are just about done with the numbers!

Seven and eight are over here looking pretty, with just a little bit of extra fun things in each block. Seven obviously has a few half rectangle triangles. Don’t worry, it’ll be worse when we get to the % block. That one is, like, allllllll HRTs. The eight has pressing instructions on making sure those half square triangles nest in the middle. That’s it, super easy other than that!
