BOMs Away - QOVF August

Hey, guess what? So in addition to a new sewing machine - that was not an expected purchase this summer - I had another sewing machine purchase planned for this summer! Okay, maybe not a sewing machine so much as the computerized longarm upgrade. And whoa baby, is it a good upgrade!

After two full days of training, I immediately jumped in and loaded up a few Quilts of Valor tops. Tested out a few different quilting designs to figure out which one I like best. Unsurprisingly, loops and stars is an immediate favorite! Practiced shopping, downloading, and importing pantographs. (Hey, it’s an important skill!)

Now….I have a lot of binding work to do. (There’s always something!) And no excuses for not getting caught up on all the tops around here!

(Also, I’ll be accepting quilts for edge to edge quilting soon!)

And so… Did anyone else work on (or start) a BOM? Or a project broken into more manageable monthly pieces? Or a few blocks for someone else’s charity project? Link up here or at What a Hoot!

BOMs Away - RSC August

And we are back on track for the usual block of the month work! This week it’s my favorite (ssh don’t tell the other projects) Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks. The color of the month is teal/aqua, so I decided to go dark in the center block and lighter all around. Next year when this color comes up, I’ll totes remember to reverse it. Right?

Pattern: Color Coded by Diane Harris / Stash Bandit

Some of the aquas are a little closer to green or light blue, but that’s kinda how aqua works, isn’t it? The middle pinwheel is fabric from a bunting I made for Lori, way way back near the beginning of my sewing life. Or maybe not. But I think it is, so she has to agree with me.

It’s getting impossible to get a shot of them all together! Probably about time for them to go hang out on the design wall next month. It’ll be nine blocks, so it’s a good place to see the starting layout. Maybe I’ll even make some of the sashing! (I definitely won’t.)

BOMs Away - Eternal Bloom Assembly 1

Guess what? It’s a month with five Mondays, so you get a bonus project!

(But Kate, it’s Tuesday!)

(Ssssh, I was busy this weekend taking almost everything out of my sewing room in preparation for my longarm computer upgrade, and this was the first chance I got to sit down and sew.)

So anyway, the bonus project for August is…Eternal Bloom! Since I skipped two months of it with my sewing machine in the shop and all.

It’s…almost together. The center borders took forever since I measured and pinned them carefully. They’re still pretty wavy, but…that’ll quilt out. Actually, they should be forced well into submission once the side flowers are added. In theory. Hopefully.

So four seams to go, sometime this week in between learning how to use my computerized longarm! And then I can tuck this away permanently while I make the borders in a long and tedious fashion.

Starring Hogwarts Houses - a Finished Quilt!

One more nerdy finish for last week’s drop! The official Geekorium theme was Robots and Droids, but we had a second mini-theme of Back to School! That one was supposed to be in July, but then the July drop got moved to the second week of July and the Back to School got combined with August’s drop. Which worked for me because I’ve got the fictional Back to Hogwarts School all sewn up!

This baby quilt was made at the same time as the House Log Cabin (OMG I should have called it Log Houses!) and quilted on the same backing. Then I got lazy and never actually bound it until this theme came along.

It’s the Vintage Star pattern from In Color Order, sized down to 36”. Next time I do baby size, though, I’m going to size it up to 40” or maybe even 44”.

The main House fabrics are Elephant House Fabrics. The rest are scraps, including the blue that was a t-shirt quilt border, the green leftover from my Log Cabin Wreath, and precious precious preciiiiiiiious Pearl Bracelets.

The binding is actually an old print - so old that I can tell you I bought it in Enid, where we haven’t lived since 2013, and it was for a dress that I made a friend’s daughter…and she just turned 18 and started her senior year of high school. So this fabric has marinated in my stash for quite some time! But even though it’s a large floral, it contains all the House colors, and ends up looking like a fun scrappy-ish binding.

The backing is a gray minky buffalo check. Nothing fancy but quite perfect and cuddly!
