Harry Potter Log Cabin - a Finished Quilt

It’s actually a quarter log cabin…and Harry Potter panels…but it’s kind of hard to fit all that in one title! And I just don’t think these nerdy quilts will get names beyond the style descriptions. They probably should, for marketing purposes, but for now, let’s just look at the quilt!

So! Harry Potter. Obviously. Howgarts, to be specific. I bought a few of these panels last year, probably to get my Fabric.com cart up to free shipping. And they waited for a long while to become something, but it was worth the wait! I’ve already made four (!!) others that are House specific (they just need a final border) but I wanted to have one that was all-Houses to kick off my new venture.

(I don’t think my neighbor’s old shed is a great backdrop here…)

I have been casually making some nerdy quilts (mostly Pokemon) this year, and they sold really well at the Pop Con, but I didn’t really know how to market them online since Cons are no longer a thing. I learned about Facebook VIP groups, and decided to start one for the nerdy stuff.

(Yeah, this isn’t gonna be THE fence spot. The best spot is too much of a slant, though. Maybe I can convince my other neighbor to let me use his brick wall…)

So anyway - the nerdy stuff is going to start in the VIP group before being offered for sale here. Please feel free to join, suggest fandoms, ask for custom designs, tell me I’m awesome….wait, you can tell me I’m awesome here, too.

This quilt features the House panels and coordinating borders - the non-blender ones are from Elephant House and they are having another small scale round now!

The quilting is stipple. I thought about changing the colors within each panel, but…dark green for everyone! Just a touch of Slytherin in every bit. You know you have it.

The backing is buffalo plaid in gray minky, and the binding is matched to each house! And yes, Hufflepuff is on top here for a reason. We are the best House.

BOMs Away - QOVF October

Well, I’m sure this is going to come as shocking information, but… I’ve gotten over-involved with Quilts of Valor here in Alabama already. I went to one presentation and now I’ve got thirteen quilt tops to longarm!

I’m also going to be doing some presentations in the mid-Alabama region. But the requests are fewer, and the quilters are more plentiful! The state coordinator even gave me an entire roll of batting and offered up backing fabric for the thirteen tops. I’m not ready to coordinate any Sew Days or block drives or Under Our Wings events, but between the state, my mother-in-law, and my friend’s mother, I’ll be doing lots of longarming, binding, and labeling. And presenting - the best part!

This quilt was made by my MIL - and it was the first quilt on the longarm after the move!

This top was made by me! It seems like forever since I pieced something RWB that wasn’t other people’s blocks or the jelly roll race. It’s Alycia Quilt’s mystery from last year, but I faced the red HSTs out instead of in, because hello STARS! I stalled out last year when I thought I was missing twelve of the four patch blocks. I never found them, so it’s more likely that I miscounted - and making them took about an hour - and then it was just an afternoon of work to put together the top! So one QOVF UFO, ready to go!

BOMs Away - Eternal Bloom Block 1

This is it! My final block for Eternal Bloom! Wait, did I say that last time I finished Block 1? No? Okay, good. So I redid the block with the pattern instructions, and I’m so glad I did. The morning glories fit much better than that random pansy-ish block. It can be a pillow or something.

See how pretty? Much better.

Lest you think that the quilt will be coming together soon, don’t worry. There’s extensively pieced borders to go. But I tried making a collage to see how it’ll look, and…

Well, it should look better than THIS at least? Sheesh. I did find a tiny error in one of the blocks when I was trying to make this work, so at least something good came out of it.

So, blocks are done. Borders are on deck. Finished flimsy….someday?

Looking Toward the Horizon - a Finished T-Shirt Quilt

Who’s ready to see my first finish in the new house, and the new fence? Okay, maaaaaaaaaybe no one cares about the fence. It’s not exactly the best background color, anyway, and my husband gave me a LOOK when I suggested painting it for the sake of blog pictures.

But the quilt! The quilt, of course, is awesome.

(Me figuring out the best time of day to take decent pictures in the new yard, not so much awesome.)

It’s the fourth quilt for the family who lost their father/husband in January. (Brother/mother/sister) The second sister wanted the same backing as her brother, and it took me forever to find it in stock during the height of pandemic mask making. So she patiently waited until after we moved and I got everything back up and running again.

Like her mother’s and sister’s, her quilt includes a piece of his parachute harness and a pair of jeans. There’s also patches and a softball shirt and all kinds of memories ready to be wrapped around her.

She also chose a sweet saying from her father for the label, and chose the roses for the binding because her dad loved roses. I love how personalized and sentimental all the family’s choices are!
