Scrapamath - a Finished Quilt

It’s another finished scrappy block of the month quilt! And goodness me, do I love a diagonal rainbow or what?

The layout made it super easy to piece this one, actually. I made each colorway one at a time, so in just over a week, I had a nice pile of finished blocks for Lori to photograph! And then I could distribute the scrappy goodness (and half square triangles) among the different blocks within the colorways for more variety.

But then, when the time came to get the blocks back and piece the quilt, I discovered I was short on the fabric needed for the sashing. Okay…so let’s go all in on the scrappy! I found a few other chunks of pure white-on-white fabric and just pieced the sashing in randomly. And you can’t tell! I mean, if you get really close, you can see the sashing is slightly different from the blocks, but it doesn’t matter in the overall design.

The binding fabric is a fairly old Joann’s print, I think. I had a piece that was almost big enough, and then a few random chunks of long triangles - it was the backing fabric from some striped table runners. (Oh look, CC is still a PITA!) The last bit across the bottom has like 10 pieced spots to get it long enough - but it’s long enough!

The quilting, I asked my dear husband for advice. He searched for “geometric” and found this apple core block design. I tried to explain to him that block designs aren’t for edge-to-edge, but he made a pouty face, so…I babysat Patricia and helped her reposition every 1.5 minutes. (Luckily it’s a smaller quilt!)

The border comes from the “business retreat” that Lori and I did at Hilton Head last year. She photographed the blocks and a bunch of pattern quilts, taught me how to do reels, and I…contributed nothing, I guess. Well - the quilts! I contributed the work that I made her do!

Anyway, one of our excursions involved Island Quilters, and one of the things that they specialize in are “half packs” - groupings of five half yard cuts. One of the ones on display had a rainbow number fabric in it. PERFECT! They must have the yardage as well, right?? Yeah, we searched the entire store and I considered buying a half dozen half packs to get my hands on the amount I needed, but Lori finally found the bolt at the edge of the cutting table. WHEW.

(Of course, it was directional and ended up being a pain to cut/piece, but it looks FANTASTIC and I don’t care about the annoyances anymore.)

My fabric isn’t available anymore, but Timeless Treasures has a great tossed rainbow numbers in both white and black backgrounds! (Bonus: not directional!)

Scrapamath Quilt - the Layout

Oh hey - we made it to the new year and it’s time to finish up our Scrapamath quilts! Right before starting our Scrappy Stars, of course. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the overlap in January when I’m finishing the full quilt pattern for one and kicking off the blocks for the other. But for today, let’s focus on Scrapamath!

The layout on this one is pretty easy - just sashing with cornerstones. And then you get to add an awesome border fabric! Did you get a good one? I used numbers (of course) but forgot that they were directional (of course.)

Also - I ran out of the white-on-white fabric that I was using for the blocks, but decided that I’m a scrap quilter. Sashings can be scrappy too. I used a few different white-on-white fabrics and you know what? You can’t really tell. So don’t be afraid to go all-in on the scrappy!

Border Tip

Adding borders - I always do sides, then top and bottom. I also always cut to size and pin - this help prevent wavy borders and your longarmer will thank you.

  • Measure your quilt top horizontally and vertically in three places and use the average number for your border length.

  • Cut your borders to size, then mark the 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 point on the quilt top and borders. (I fold mine in half and use my iron to make a heat mark at halfway, then fold in the edges to the middle and heat mark the fold.) Pin!

  • Sew carefully to avoid stretching the fabric, making sure you keep the pin/heat marks even. Press seams toward the border fabric.

BOMS AWAY - AN ANNOUNCEMENT

Lyn and I decided to take BOMs Away to Facebook! The group will allow us (and everyone else!) to like and comment on your projects easier! If you’re on Facebook….come join the group! I hope you do - I know I wouldn’t get much BOM work done without the motivation of liking pretty pictures.

Scrapamath Filler Blocks

Wheee we made it to December! And it’s a fun little filler block - a good place to show off a slightly bigger scrap print. And just for Christmas, Lori chose to photograph the red and green blocks. She’s detail-orientated like that!

So yes, there’s a little bit of bias triangles. But they’re small and I believe in you! You can do it! We’ve been doing bias HRTs all year, these are going to be so easy for you! Also they’re slightly oversized so you can trim down. So there’s that.

Scrapamath Blocks > %

Y’all, we made it! It’s the last math symbol blocks of the Scrapamath Block of the Month quilt! Next month is the scrappy filler blocks! (I can not believe it’s November. How did we get here?? I need to start Christmas sewing. Like three months ago.) Anyway, I saved the hardest ones for last. I’m really sorry. There’s, like, a lot of HRTs in these two.

So, yeah. Pretty much all HRTs. If it makes you feel any better, I wrote this block pattern at the same time I planned next year’s scrappy BOM, and I decided…you know what, there’s no HRTs next year. Just HSTs and alllllllllll the single squares. And, bonus, we’re doing eight-at-a-time HSTs! What, that makes you think there will be excessive amounts of HSTs? No, never! (Wait yes.)

Also, I have the light blue block listed as a greater than symbol, but ssssh, secret math fact - if you face it to the left instead of the right, it’s a less than symbol. Quilter’s choice!
