Caramel apples are pretty popular during the fall, but what about chocolate apples? In my opinion, anything with chocolate is just a little better! These Halloween-themed chocolate apples are an excellent treat to make during the autumn season. The best part is you can customize them for any holiday or time of year by changing out your decorations.
This year, I went with a monster theme using candy eyes and monster sprinkles. I added a popsicle stick through the center so that it would be an easy grab-and-go treat. These would also be spectacularly cute, wrapped in cellophane and decorated with Halloween ribbon as a party favor or host gift.

🥣 Ingredients and Notes
Large Apples: Two large apples will make approximately 8 slices. Use more apples to make a larger batch. I used Honeycrisp apples.
Dark Chocolate Chips: Use high-quality dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Candy Eyes: These can be found in the baking section of your grocery store.
Halloween Sprinkles: Any Halloween sprinkles will do. I found a Monster Mix at the store that I thought was super cute. You can change out the sprinkles for more natural ingredients, such as coconut flakes or chopped nuts.
👩🏻🍳 How to Make Halloween Chocolate Apples
Step 1: Slice your large apples into thin slices. To avoid the core, I make two slices on each side of the apples.
Step 2: Melt your chocolate chips in a glass bowl in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring with a spatula between each increment until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
Step 3: Add your apple slices one at a time to the bowl of melted chocolate. Dip the apples into the chocolate using a spoon or spatula to coat the apple slices. Using tongs to tap the excess chocolate off the apple slices and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 4: Immediately add the candy eyes and sprinkles before the chocolate sets.
Step 5: Place popsicle sticks or wooden skewers under the chocolate apple so that the melted chocolate covers the stick. Alternatively, you can cut a small hole in the bottom of the apple slice to allow the popsicle stick to glide into place.
Step 6: Transfer them to the refrigerator for 10 minutes to set. Serve and enjoy!
❓ FAQS
A firm apple is best for covering in chocolate. I recommend Honeycrisp, Granny Smith Apples, Gala, Fuji, or Braeburn.
Apples are associated with Halloween primarily because of the longstanding tradition of “bobbing for apples.” This Halloween game involves filling a large tub with water and floating apples in it, and participants try to grab the apples with their teeth while keeping their hands behind their backs. This activity has its roots in Celtic and Roman harvest festivals, and over time, it became a popular Halloween tradition, symbolizing the season’s bounty and playful festivities. Additionally, apples are readily available in the fall, aligning with the timing of Halloween celebrations.
If the apples are not sliced and then covered with chocolate, they will last longer, approximately one week. However, if you slice the apples, they will last up to 4 days.
📖 Variations and Substitutions
Mummy Apples: Melt white chocolate in the microwave in 30-second increments. Stir to combine. Drizzle the melted white chocolate in a zig-zag pattern. Add two candy eyes.
Ghosts: Instead of dark chocolate, dip apples in melted white chocolate and use dark chocolate chips for the eyes and mouth.
Candy Apples: Cover your chocolate apples with the season’s most popular Halloween candy.
🍽 How to Serve
I recommend adding a popsicle stick or a lollipop stick to the bottom of the apple slice so that they can be enjoyed on the go.
🫙 How to Store and Keep
I recommend making them no more than 1-2 days in advance. Since they are made with apples, which are perishable, and these apples are sliced, you want them to taste as fresh as possible.
These chocolate apples are best enjoyed fresh but they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
