SPIR-V on ROCm: A Portable IR for AMD GPUs

ROCm has compiled GPU code ahead of time (AOT), once per target architecture, since its first release. CPU software shifted to runtime just-in-time (JIT) compilation in the 1990s — Java HotSpot, V8, LuaJIT, .NET RyuJIT, PyPy — once the matrix of target × workload × deployment became too large to enumerate at build time. With its adoption of SPIR-V, ROCm now brings the compile-once, specialize-on-device model to AMD GPUs. 

This post covers what SPIR-V is, why AMD adopted it, the compilation model and its trade-offs, and a reproducible single-kernel HIP example with measurements on MI350X (CDNA4), spot-checked on RX 9070 XT (RDNA4). Leadwerks 5.1 Leverages Khronos glTF and PBR Support

The latest release of Leadwerks 5.1 expands its support for Khronos technologies with new capabilities that improve graphics quality and asset interoperability.

Leadwerks now supports the MSFT_texture_dds glTF extension, enabling seamless import and export of models and scenes using DDS compressed textures while maintaining PNG fallbacks for broader compatibility. The update also adds the Khronos PBR Neutral Tone Mapper as a world rendering option, giving developers a standardized approach to accurate, natural-looking color reproduction across physically based rendering (PBR) workflows.

The release demonstrates how Khronos standards continue to help developers build high-performance graphics applications with consistent visual quality and efficient asset pipelines.

OpenXR Introduces Tiered Adopter Fees to Expand Its Ecosystem of Conformant Implementations

The OpenXR Conformance Test Suite is freely available as open source, so any implementer can use it to test and improve an implementation. Joining the OpenXR Adopter Program gives an organization the right to submit test results for review by the OpenXR Working Group, and if the results meet the required criteria and are approved, the implementation can be promoted as officially OpenXR conformant.

To make official conformance accessible to smaller organizations, Khronos is introducing tiered OpenXR Adopter subscription and renewal fees based on company size. The goal is straightforward: expand the ecosystem of officially conformant OpenXR implementations, giving developers a broader and more dependable range of compatible products.

Khronos is excited to release the 2026 Real-Time Shading Ecosystem Survey Report, a summary of insights from over 400 shader developers, graphics programmers, rendering engineers, and tools creators. Conducted between June 16 and July 10, 2026, the survey captures a clear picture of how the real-time shading community works today — and where standardization efforts can deliver the greatest impact.

glTF Interactivity Extension Submitted for Ratification

The Khronos Group today announced that the KHR_interactivity extension for glTF 2.0 has been submitted for ratification. As interactive 3D content becomes central to a growing range of markets, KHR_interactivity lets creators build portable, self-contained interactive behaviors — expressed as behavior graphs — into the glTF asset itself, eliminating the need to hard-code interactivity for every platform and application. The extension is the result of substantial collaboration across the 3D content ecosystem, with support already established in multiple tools and runtimes.
