- Originally is was the saga of a working mom raising her three sons alone while her pilot husband was away, but after star Valerie Harper left, Sandy Duncan stepped in as the boys' aunt.
- In the near future with a intergalactic vampire plague threatening earth, an expedition is sent to a distant galaxy in hopes of discovering the plague's source. - An electrical short in an old lamp stored in the attic causes a house fire that seriously damages the Hogan home. The fire renews the family's grief over Valerie's recent death, compounded when David finds a charred picture of his mother on what used to be his nightstand. But when Mark and Willie complain over maybe being out of their home for weeks, David's devotional speech gives everyone a reason to be thankful.
- The Hogans are off to California to help cheer up Sandy and Michael's father, who has just gone through a divorce. While there, Mark and Willie become interested in the local girls, and David crashes a film set.
- After the storm, Sandy tries to convince Lloyd to return to live with them in Chicago. Mark gets it into his head that Cara is being unfaithful so he goes on a date with another girl. Dave finally gets fed up with Jennifer's demands .
- Willie and Mark sneak onto the neighbors' roof to peek at their girl's 13th birthday slumber party. Meanwhile, David needs Valerie to teach him swing dancing for a date.
- Michael is ridiculed when he reports seeing a UFO while flying his airliner. Sandy makes things worse when she takes him to a UFO support group. Mark and Willie make David their slave so he can get an extra concert ticket they have.
- Dave is having a woman drought, so he decides to wear Michael's pilot's uniform. He also uses Michael's name, and goes to a bar with Burt, with some initial success. Things go wrong when the woman he meets turns up at the Hogan house.
- Sandy's friend from Italy is coming to America to teach Italian at the boy's school with Sandy. The boys are initially reluctant, until they see how beautiful she is. David, in particular, is very smitten and he can't do enough for her.
- Valerie agrees to direct Annie's play for the community theater - but upon discovering that the local weather girl cast in the lead is talentless, she has to decide if her understudy Mrs. Poole is right for the part.
- There is a new neighbour who is a bit mysterious and Dave suspects that he is a criminal. Willie employs Mark to tutor him in biology when Michael is furious about his poor results. When he succeeds the teacher accuses him of cheating.
- David has to forgo a camping holiday because he has to finish a paper by Monday but spends most of the time avoiding it. Michael is nervous about his first date and apprehensive about how it'll go. It goes badly and from disaster to disaster.
- The family engages in a dogfight over Murray after the vet suggests the old dog be put to sleep.
- Dave has been reading his psychology texts and decides that he needs to go back to being the boys' older brother again. Michael wants Sandy to go on a blind date and she agrees, as long as he goes on one too, at the same time.
- A knee injury in a basketball game lands David in the hospital, but even he is taken aback by how frightened he is about the surgery. Mark is desperately trying to avoid Willie's friend Judy, who is determined to be his girlfriend.
- Dave has trouble trying to sell his mountain bike and he is forced to compromise. A neighbour breaks up with her boyfriend and she turns to Sandy for some advice. Sandy ends up having to be her friend, and she won't leave Sandy alone.
- Sandy's ex-husband Richard is getting remarried, and he asks Dave to be his best man. Sandy is not happy with the situation, but goes to the wedding anyway. Lloyd buys Mark and Willie a motorcycle without asking Michael first.
- Sandy agrees to let her ex-husband escort her to his sister's wedding, but is reminded why she divorced him. Dave sits in on his dad's poker game.

- Sandy trips over at a baby shower, falls down some stairs and hits her head. This causes her to completely lose her short term memory. Her inability to remember events causes some awkward situations, especially for Dave.
- Dave's 21st is coming up, so Michael gives him a pocket watch that is a Hogan family heirloom, given to the eldest male in the family. Unfortunately, Dave breaks it. A mix-up leads to Mark and Willie being sacked from Bossy Burger.
- Mark's desire to be more spontaneous leads to a bizarre scene at an awards presentation, and Valerie also finds herself dealing with Willie's goal of becoming a ninja and David's griping about a missed party.
- The Hogans redo the lounge room floor, which doesn't quite go as planned. Mark gets Willie a job at Bossy Burger. Willie doesn't take it seriously and Mark continually covers for him. However, the boss promotes Willie to assistant manager.
- When Michael's schedule has him flying to Europe on their anniversary, Valerie patiently waits for his traditional phone call to celebrate, and the boys attempt to cheer her up while their father is away.
- David smitten with a young woman, develops cold feet when she agrees to go out with him.

- There's conflict in the video store between Lloyd and Michael. Dave helps Burt run for student body treasurer. Mark and Cara are forced up to his room to study for a test - but after they fall asleep, nobody believes nothing happened.
- Willie learns a tough lesson about the difference between television and reality when he takes the family car for a joy ride, causes a hit-and-run accident, and allows David to be blamed. When David tells Willie he is aware of what's going on, Willie imagines a "happy ending in 30 minutes"-type resolution to his predicament. However, Valerie is outraged when Willie decides to finally come clean, and he doesn't get the happy resolution he expected.
- Dave is doing a video class project of a 'typical American family' where he is required to record everything that is happening. Mark is going for his driver's licence but his overconfidence causes him to have an accident.
