By way of his grandfather, literary editor Maxwell Perkins, he descends from Senator Wm. Evarts, Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and through Roger Sherman's grandfather, Roger Wellington, he descends from Edward I, King of England.

Auditioned for the role of Han Solo in Krieg der Sterne (1977). Although he did not get the part, he later won the role for the NPR radio adaptations of Star Wars (1981), The Empire Strikes Back (1983), and Return of the Jedi (1996).

A Mount Union College on-campus house (Perry F. King Guest House) is named after his grandfather who was a graduate and benefactor of Mount Union. Perry King (the actor) grew up in the house, but his father (Dr. Robert King) donated the house to the college in 1981 with the understanding it would be named after his father, Dr. Perry F. King.
