He was once robbed by street gang members in South Central L.A. They took his shirt, his shoes, and a one-dollar bill while he was trying to get to a Baywatch - Die Rettungsschwimmer von Malibu (1989) audition.

After filming American Pie: Wie ein heißer Apfelkuchen (1999), he was a "Churro" guy at the Los Angeles Zoo. When one of the apes threw a pine cone at him, he saw that as a sign that he was meant to do something else, so he quit. Lucky for him, American Pie was a hit and he became a much sought-after comedy actor.

Considers Ein Duke kommt selten allein (2005) and Mr. Woodcock (2007) to be the worst films he has ever done.

Participated in the annual Drambuie Pursuit in Scotland. The Drambuie Pursuit takes place once a year and includes an archery contest on the first day and then a second day that includes kayaking, a castle run, boating, mountain biking, rock-climbing, rafting, cross-country biking, off-road buggy racing, and canoeing. When asked why his name is spelled 'Seann' instead of 'Sean', he stated that he asked his mother the same question, but never got a clear answer. She alternately claimed he was named after Sean Connery, and that they had the name 'Sunshine' in mind for a girl. He joked that the lack of a good explanation probably means that there were some drugs involved.

Loves backpacking around Europe, and often takes time off from filming to travel around.

Grew up not far from the Eden Prairie mall, the location at which much of Kevin Smith's Mallrats (1995) was filmed. He is a huge fan of the movie, has a one sheet above his bed and jumped at the chance to work with Smith on Jay und Silent Bob schlagen zurück (2001).

He was considered for the role of Evan Treborn in Butterfly Effect (2004). The role of Evan went to Ashton Kutcher.
