England, 1940: When bombs trap eight children in the cellar of their orphanage, their teacher, Miss Shaw, reads them a story. As the tale unfolds, they are magically transported to a timeless, mythical island, where they witness the story of Darkness and Light, and of how their union and their conflict produced the Iris Warriors, the seven colours of the rainbow which imbue the world with colour. As the candles burn low and bombs continue to fall around them, Darkness, like a black widow spider, seeks on the destruction of her colourful children. Miss Shaw and the orphans begin to fear that neither they nor the Iris Warriors will survive the encroaching darkness.
First thing to say is the lovely Jessica Brown Findlay does a cracking job as Miss Shaw. The kids also aren't too shabby at acting, and they all put some effort in.
Sadly, they were let down by a terrible screenplay and some very poor editing and directing.
The ballet, which was at least 80% of the film, was good enough, and colourful, but I have seen 16 year olds do better. However whether it was good or bad is largely irrelevant because it was promoted as a family fantasy/musical. No mention of ballet, which in fact dominated the entire film.
I'm sure there's a decent moral to the story and it might help kids learn colours, or to not be afraid of the dark. But as a film it left me cold aside form the great acting. I gave it a 3 overall which is a shame.

I truly enjoy fantasy films and was expecting such. BUT, this was so much more! I was TOTALLY mesmerized by the costumes, lighting and performance. I have seen a bit of ballet in my 70+ years, but this was AMAZING! The story started as a WWII air raid and ended in, literally, a blaze of light. I strongly encourage parents to insure their children see this movie. The fantasy evolves into an extremely enjoyable ballet performance that is very easy to follow because of the narration. What a wonderful introduction to this genre of dance. I am so glad i watched it!!!
It's not that this is poorly done, it's just not what the viewer expects it to be. It's like being offered ice cream and served oatmeal instead.
The story itself isn't bad. In fact I believe the narration was one of the high points. The script was well written and the language used poetic and enjoyable.
The dancing itself was so-so. The choreography wasn't particularly memorable and the set pretty much a one-pony act. There is some CGI and special effects thrown in, but this would have been more impressive had they used actual set effects instead.
It was the combination of real-life setting with the fantasy setting that threw this off-center. I would have rather seen the teacher and children as an actual part of the play... and the entire thing presented as a ballet/story... rather than mislead the audience as to what they're going to see. Because really, not everyone liked ballet, right?
That's it's major shortcoming-- misleading marketing. For me it was fairly boring, and that's not because I'm easily bored. I love art for the sake of art, but I don't appreciate a dance act when I've settled down to watch a fantasy movie. Would you like some peanut butter instead of apple pie?

But surtainly a smashing blockbuster for everybody that love the art of movement with music, namely ballett, i dont know which balletensemble acts out here, but you wont come nearer to a royal ballet than this on a silverscreen. I am surtainly not a ballerina fan but this was actually beautiful and view worthy.
The dance is superb, the score smashing, the vfx and special effects enchanting, and the use of colours light and shadow will mesmerize you for 80 minutes.
The story is aimed for children( and old children 60+), the story surrounds the topic of ''the creation'' with or without any religious or politicalgoals, a story narrated by ms sybil from downtown abbey, a beautiful actress with a vivid and fairytailenbalming voice that will block out any disturbancies and makes your ability to tunnelview from the pinpoint of the big bang to the end of living daylights, a story that will make your fantasy spin off, and without much doubt i will call this film a delicassy of a cultural sweetened independent filmaking of high technical standard.
So let your iris become sore of the warriors of light, dark and colours and feed your corona fatigue due to shutdowns and quaranteens, this is food for the squemish among us, and of course the grumpy old man. A recommend.

One can certainly see what the gist is but also the joining of a story to a performance doesn't really work in this instance.
I'm left thinking that it should be one or the other, a story or a performance of dance.
Its also hurried and rushed, so very matter of fact and scripted.
