Holden Goes Off the Track
The episode dives into moral ambiguity, the abuse of power, and the challenges of maintaining personal relationships while working in the grim world of criminal psychology
The episode continues to have Ford dealing with the fallout of the ongoing Altuna case. Wendy and Bill are trying to have a new member join the team, who can bring new ideas and perspectives. Holden starts to have some personal and emotional issues, such as having distrust about his girlfriend.
This episodes sees Holden being invited to speak to a school. During his talk, he is approached by a teacher, Janet Ebner, who has concerns about Principal Roger Wade's behavior. She tells Holden that Wade likes to tickle children's feet and give them nickels afterwards. Ford is very suspicious about this. Bill however, refuses to investigate with Ford. Bill considers the activity weird, but doesn't believe it is a crime. Despite this, Ford decides to investigate it on his own.
Ford brings Gregg Smith with him to speak with Wade. After speaking with him, Wade insists that what he does with the kids is a positive experience for the kids and makes school discipline more enjoyable.
After speaking to Wade, Gregg tells Shepard what he saw. Shepard then advises Ford to drop his investigation into the principal.
Meanwhile, Ford returns to Oregon to interview Jerry Brudos, who is more talkative this time. Debbie invites Ford to her graduate class, where he catches her in a compromising position with Patrick, her project partner. Angered, Ford leaves the graduate class in a fury. Afterwards, Ford gets a call from the school saying the principal is going to be fired.
The dialogue, as usual, adds a lot to the story and plot of the episode. It helps add the suspense, which keeps many people enjoying the show. Also, the character's interactions and dynamics help add value to the episode.
Themes explored in this episode include the abuse of power, boundaries, and relationships. Ford has lost the trust he had in his relationship, leading him to be upset when he suspects Debbie is cheating on him. Another theme is boundaries, particularly if someone does not respect your boundaries.
The episode has received a lot of positivity and good reception overall. Some people have had some complaints, particularly on Ford being an unlikeable character and making the episode difficult to watch. Also, "the episode feels like a bunch of plot threads that go nowhere", with Ford not being punished for abusing power, and the episode's stories being unresolved.
The episode shows many aspects that is difficult, but makes for a engaging show to watch and enjoy. Despite the flaws pointed out by some people, the overall reception has been good and positive, leaving this to be a very enjoyable episode.

- PatzerIn the teacher's lounge, you can see the date "April 3, 1978" on the chalkboard. Later in the episode, Will asks Holden what the interviewee is listening to. Holden replies "Bittaker and Norris". Referencing the killers Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris. These men killed five teenagers in the time span of June 24, 1979, to October 31, 1979. Making it impossible for them to have tapes on the killers.

Debbie Mitford: Goffman says we wear these masks to make everyone else comfortable. Like you and your suits.
Holden Ford: We're not talking about my clothes again.
Debbie Mitford: Your suit is your uniform you wear to fit in at Quantico.
Holden Ford: I don't want to fit in.
Debbie Mitford: Everyone is trying to fit in.
Holden Ford: Guess that explains your hippie thing, too.
Debbie Mitford: My "hippie" thing?
Holden Ford: Your peasant tops, long hair, bracelets, leather sandals. Helps you assimilate on campus.
Debbie Mitford: Right. It's exactly the same.
Holden Ford: What would you wear if no one were looking?
Debbie Mitford: Probably nothing. What about you?
Holden Ford: I'd wear my suit.
