Brief Review -
A vintage tragic romance. Much before we met Laila Majnu or other editions on screen. Just after the begining credits ends you see Swaran Lata singing a romantic song and the next moment you believe that you are in the 40s. Pure Nostalgia! So Rattan is tragic romance which has been repeated again and again in Bollywood cinema over the years from different angles yet remains the most successful edition ever. Govind and Gouri are childhood friends who love each other. But as they belong to different castes, they can't marry each other. When Gouri marries another person of older age, things changes a lot and the dilemma strikes hGovind's life. To be frank, there was a chance to have a positive ending and it would have been much better than what they have shown. May be the dilemma was too mainstream and the husband's character was really path-breaking so yes I would have liked it more if the path-breaking stuff had overshadowed mainstream dilemma. Well, it's my thinking and the audience who have loved such films (recently Kabir Singh) will have no issues with the film as otherwise there is nothing much wrong in the film. It has a nostalgic romance with poetic vocabulary and terrific music of Naushad. The Lyrics pinned by Madhok adds the cherry on the top. Swaran Lata looks gorgeous in traditional get up and Karan Dewan seems well versed with the innocence of the character. Dialogues are too good for its time and the comic touch is fantastic even for today's time. M. Sadiq's direction is gripping throught the narrative and despite the musical narrative he didn't lose his grasp on the storytelling. I personally wish it had intellectual climax with positive end which might have been useful for stopping the society from doing the same mistakes again but anyways, it's fabulous film and deserved to become a Record Grosser.
