Smalltown U.S.A. celebrates Christmas with the hope that the boys will return home from the war. One family awaits the return of their eldest son to his pregnant wife while watching fearfully as a younger son prepares to leave for the front. Bittersweet, nostalgic look at a simpler, yet tragic, holiday season.

WUSSTEST DU SCHON:
- WissenswertesPittsfield, MA, where Leah Bundy works in a war plant, is 174.2 miles from Rockport, the Bundys' home town. As of 2017, it's a little more than three hours, thirty minutes' trip via I-90 E, or approximately four hours via "surface roads." By bus, in a snowstorm, at night, in 1944 it might stretch to five or more hours.
- PatzerAfter the bus accident, Aaron and the bus driver discover a broken tie-rod in the steering system, so the bus could not be driven, as is said. Later the bus is shown being flat-towed, with all four wheels on the ground. With a broken tie-rod, the vehicle would have to be towed with the front wheels off the ground, as the right wheel would not track.
