        Eeshwar is truly Eeshwar

There are very few movies which inspire oneself. Eeshwar is one of them. Anil Kapoor has given one of his career best performances. You can see how an actor grows to the fullest maturity by seeing the performance of Mr. Kapoor in this movie. The character Eeshwar is played by Anil Kapoor. The story is of a person who has grown of age but has not grown as of his intellectuality. Eeshwar has his own family and he narrates his story in the movie.

It is not that everyday you get to see such kinds of movies. Eeshwar is a perfect example of classic. His wife is a widow. Eeshwar re-marries her. She plays an important role in carving the lifestyle of Eeshwar. It is a tragic film very well casted and framed. It is a must watch for everyone.

        An excellent movie!

Honestly, one of my all time favorites. A true classic! Brilliant performances by Anil Kapoor and Vijayshanti, including Asha Sachdev. The characters make you fall in love with them, and relate to them. You can actually feel their pain. Worth every moment! A must see movie! A good tribute to the mentally challenged, showing that when faced with situations they prove their competency. A real-life outlook to the world as opposed to the usual reel-life cinema approach. It makes your heart go out to the characters, especially with the excellent dramatization by Anil Kapoor, one of his BEST performances ever. Vijayshanti too, once again proves her credentials.

Anil Kapoor at his very best!

One of the many 'career' defining roles from Anil Kapoor and one of the best in hindi cinema in general... The movie was supposed to be directed by Raj Kapoor to start with, but the moment never came as the Raj Kapoorji passed away... But the great K Viswanath(the one who directed the original Swathi Muthayam) took over and recreated the magic and delivered a classic! The character of EEshwar was right out of Raj Kapoor's books and as originally perceived by him. Those who have seen the movie would notice the way K Viswanath pays his tribute to Raj Kapoor at the start of the movie just as the R K Films have it. Anil Kapoor once again reminds of Raj Kapoor in this character portrayal, just as he did it with Woh Saat Din...At the same time, the displayed the part of a mentally challenged person as good as anybody has done it before and something which was associated with Sanjeev Kumar(Khilona). The movie is full of classic moments, the best one being the climax where the "tulsi" is what Anil wants to take with him! Great performance by Vijayashanti and she deserves an applause too. good support by Saeed Jaffrey, Gulshan Grover and others.

        10 out of 10.

        Eeshwar cannot be remade..

The 1989 Hindi film Eeshwar, directed by K. Vishwanath and starring Anil Kapoor in one of his most remarkable performances, is a heartwarming classic that resonates with audiences across generations. This cinematic gem is a perfect blend of simplicity, emotion, and storytelling, with every element falling into place flawlessly. It's a movie that stands as a timeless testament to the power of human values and emotions, making it an irreplaceable masterpiece that cannot be remade.

        The Story of Eeshwar

The narrative of Eeshwar revolves around a simple, kind-hearted man named Eeshwar (played by Anil Kapoor), whose innocence and childlike demeanor make him the soul of his small-town community. Despite his cheerful disposition and boundless compassion, Eeshwar is often underestimated and dismissed by others due to his naive and eccentric nature.

Eeshwar's life takes a poignant turn when he falls in love with Lalita (Vijayashanti), a widow struggling to make ends meet while raising her son. Lalita initially rejects Eeshwar's advances, wary of his immaturity and the challenges that come with his personality. However, as time passes, she comes to see the purity and sincerity in his love. Eeshwar's efforts to bring joy and stability to her life form the crux of the film.

The movie is a touching exploration of themes like unconditional love, acceptance, and the triumph of innocence in a world often clouded by cynicism and selfishness. It also highlights societal prejudices, particularly against widows, making it a socially relevant tale that remains impactful even today.

        Anil Kapoor's Stellar Performance

Anil Kapoor delivers one of the most memorable performances of his career as Eeshwar. He portrays the character's innocence, vulnerability, and boundless love with such authenticity that it's impossible to separate the actor from the role. Kapoor's ability to bring a childlike charm to the character without making it caricaturish is a testament to his versatility as an actor.

His nuanced performance captures every shade of Eeshwar's personality - from his joy and optimism to his pain and longing. It's a role that requires an incredible emotional range, and Kapoor delivers it with perfection, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.

        Vijayashanti's Powerful Presence

Vijayashanti, as Lalita, brings a quiet strength and dignity to her character. Her portrayal of a woman burdened by societal expectations yet yearning for love and companionship is deeply moving. The chemistry between Anil Kapoor and Vijayashanti is natural and compelling, making their relationship the emotional backbone of the film.

        K. Vishwanath's Direction

        K. Vishwanath, known for his ability to blend social issues with heartfelt storytelling, crafts a masterpiece with Eeshwar. His direction brings out the best in every character, ensuring that no moment feels forced or out of place. The screenplay is simple yet impactful, with dialogues that resonate deeply.

Vishwanath's storytelling shines in the way he handles sensitive themes. He never resorts to melodrama but instead relies on subtlety and authenticity to evoke emotions. The film's pacing allows the audience to connect with the characters and their journey, making the story feel personal and relatable.

        Music and Cinematography

The music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal is soulful and perfectly complements the film's tone. Songs like "Hamare Ghar Mein Thoda Sa" beautifully capture the emotional core of the story, adding depth to the narrative. The background score further enhances the poignant moments, leaving a lasting impression.

The cinematography captures the simplicity of small-town life with a sense of warmth and nostalgia. The visuals are rich with cultural nuances, grounding the story in a relatable setting.

        Why Eeshwar Cannot Be Remade

What makes Eeshwar irreplaceable is the perfect synergy between its characters, performances, and storytelling. Anil Kapoor's portrayal of Eeshwar is so iconic that imagining anyone else in the role feels impossible. Similarly, the direction by K. Vishwanath, coupled with the film's deeply rooted social and emotional themes, creates an experience that belongs to a specific time and place, yet remains universal in its appeal.

The movie's charm lies in its innocence and authenticity - qualities that are increasingly rare in contemporary cinema. Any attempt to remake Eeshwar would risk losing the delicate balance of simplicity and depth that defines the original.

        Final Thoughts

Eeshwar is a cinematic treasure that transcends time. It's a movie that celebrates love, kindness, and the triumph of humanity over societal prejudices. Every element - from Anil Kapoor's outstanding performance to K. Vishwanath's masterful direction - comes together to create a film that is as moving as it is memorable.

This is a movie that cannot and should not be remade. Its timeless appeal lies in its purity and perfection, making it a masterpiece that will continue to touch hearts for generations to come.

An offbeat Anil Kapoor still strikes gold!

        Eeshwar review :

He is a village simpleton who wishes good for everybody. He never lies and hates someone hiding the truth. He follows all religions and loves humanity. All this personal goodness is mistaken for mental instability. Thats Eeshwar for you.

"Main Eeshwarchand Vishnuchand Brahmanand Varma" is his elaborate introduction to strangers. Anil Kapoor playing the titular role is superlative indeed. In fact, Kapoor was riding high on success of Tezaab (1988) and Ram Lakhan (1989) in which he played street smart tapori and Eeshwar was totally opposite of that image. The film enabled him to highlight his versatility as an actor and its decent success at the box office cemented his star status even more.

Telugu superstarni Vijayashanti played the poor widow whom Eeshwar weds impromptu as he believes it will rid her of sadness and troubles. Her performance was also much appreciated in this movie. Gulshan Grover was noticed even in a small role of a lecherous neighbour who tries to rape Vijayashanti. Asha Sachdev as Dhanno the dhoban was also memorable. Her bathing scene invoked ceetis from the front benchers.

I saw Eeshwar with my dear grandmother at Bijlee Cinema, Matunga. We both liked the movie particularly my grandma loved the widow remarriage theme. The audience was also impressed by the overall movie though they were taken aback by the opening scene where we see an old and weak Anil Kapoor trying to repair the antique wall clock. It was a significant departure from his street smart Lakhan Pratap Singh they had seen a few weeks before..

Eeshwar remains one of Anil's underrated performances of his long career. It was much later that I came to know that it was a remake of director K. Vishwanath's own Swati Mutyam (1986) which starred Kamal Hassan. I am yet to watch that Telugu original. Maybe soon!

        Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Anil Kapoor stated "Eeshwar,I had given up everything non-veg including flirting with girls for 15 days before the filming started and of course right throughout the shooting.
