Writer Marc Cushman was a fan of Raymond Chandler and his Phillip Marlow books, prompting this movie, and others in the series, to be a tribute to the wise-cracking detective genre. Rick Savage played Harlow first, in two movies, followed by Mike Honer, in one, and now Randy West. West would return, and, later, turn the role over to Randy Spears.
