The Slave Mart

Marguerite Snow is fresh off the boat, looking for her aunt, when White Slavers grab her. James Cruze rescues her. Later, the guys spot Cruze, knock him out and send his mother a ransom note. Marguerite and her aunt rescue him. When the two women are in Cruze's neighborhood, he introduces them to his mother, who takes in Marguerite. Meanwhile, Cruze has been having trouble with his fiancee.

The only clear identification in this movie are Cruze and Miss Snow as performers. Although there are some nice visual grace notes -- the alternating block of the left and right halves of the screen to focus on one performer, for one -- the story has enough crudities -- somehow the White Slavers know everything about Mr. Cruze, and always turn up wherever he goes -- and outright vulgarity -- several times a single female breast is briefly revealed -- that this movie has a tawdry and amateurish look to it -- although the camerawork is always first-rate.

Cruze and Snow were married when this film was made and would divorce in 1923. Perhaps this was why they had both been cast.
