This low-budget fishing drama was made in 1967 along the bleak Atlantic coast of South Africa. Gert van den Bergh portrays a fishing captain who refuses to acknowledge the existence of his younger son (Antony Thomas) after the boy's brother is accidentally killed at sea. In an attempt to prove himself, the young man joins the crew of one of his father's trawlers. A saccharine love story is then woven into the plot, as Anthony and the skipper's daughter fall in love. The film tries to explain the motivation of its characters, but becomes grounded in the shallows of pretentious, amateurish movie making. Released in the U.S. in 1969.
This is one of the greatest movies I've seen thus far in my movie watching career.
It was photographed superbly and the acting is fantastic to say the least.
It was made in 1967 and it clearly shows that USA and UK is not the only movie making countrys of that era. Wild season proves that South Africa as a movie making country is underrated. Apart from most of the huge budget contenders from the same period, I don't think there's any movies that was made for the same price that would be better than "wild season". This piece is totally great and its a shame that its only available in the South African archive.
