Although this movie was obviously intended for family viewing, it was so banal, badly acted and formulaic that it took on a sort of bizarre charm. The landscape is beautiful, but the starring wolves were so obviously hand reared and trained that there was impossible to portray them as being dangerous on threatening to anybody or anything. One situation after another (not to mention the behaviour of the baddie with his gun) left one wondering what on earth was going on. Nothing seemed to make any sense. The storyline was so absurd, and the filming of the action sequences so stiff and badly edited that the film came over as a spoof rather than anything to be taken seriously. A candidate as one of the worst films of the decade........
I first watched this movie when I was a kid and it was my favorite movie. I watched it several times. The movie is exciting, the acting is good and I find the climbing convincing. Kim is brave and tough girl with strong opinions. She is a good role model for girls who are only taught to be sweet and kind.
Because of this movie I started loving wolves and as an adult I have become a Norwegian wolf fighter (and animal activist). Many shepards in Norway wants wolves eradicated. And some people living in the so-called wolf zone, that openly say they want the wolves to live, have recieved death-threats or violence. So that one of the shepards in the movie is angry is realistic. There are many wolf haters in Norway, but the majority wants the wolves to live.
And unfortunality, many shepards and politicians from the Center Party (formerly the Peasants' Party) work in the Predatory Committee which decides how many wolves are to be shot each year. And Norwegian politicians find killing wolves to reduce the predator conflict. This movie is just as relavant in 2022 as it was in 2003. Let the wolves live!

This looks like the Norwegian version of a wolfy Lassie. And it all the cliches that could make it a predictable American movie. But it is not...and perhaps that is what makes it a better one.
And Braaten makes a great debut here as Kim, the little girl who does what she can to save the wolf and it's puppy from three angry shepards. A true adventure it is...but perhaps in a smaller scale than you might would expect.

This is a very good movie for kids, the acting is very good, the wolf is awesome, and although it's "Lassie'ish" it does not suffer from a common Hollywood kids movie syndrome. I don't know why, but when Hollywood makes a movie about kids and animals they seem obsessed with making your kid cry. This Norwegian film will actually make your kid laugh, and you too, there is one sort of sad part but it's expected, and not even Kim cries in the scene.
For some folks in the USA the subtitles might be a bit of a pain, but the movie is worth it. Don't expect to rent this one at your local video store though, if you want a copy you'll probably have to order one for purchase, but it's worth it.
