The movie addressed fears of people and what they think is expected of themselves from others. It's comedic tone helps us see that the only important appearance we should be concerned with, is showing our happiness with who we are and what we've become. The movie started out a little slow, with a few laughs here and there. However, it picked up steam and got much better toward the middle and end. It was funny, cute, a little sad, and my favorite part, there was a happy ending. It was great to see local town businesses, parks, and city streets filmed in this movie. What a great city...Kalamazoo! And the movie was very enjoyable! I live in Lapeer, and will see it again when it is released on the east side of the state!
I went to see the movie in my hometown of KALAMAZOO. It was great to see a film made in the town where I grew up and live. It was fun to see how many of the places I could recognize. The show I went and saw had a nice surprise after the movie was over. The stars of the movie and the producer showed up for a question and answer session. After that, there was a CD autograph session in the lobby. You could purchase the sound track (made by all local KALAMAZOO musicians) and have them sign it. I was able to get all 5 signatures. They were Michael Boatman, Mayim Bialik (SP?), Josie Davis, Joanna Clare Scott and David O'Malley. It was a great time after a great movie.
I was afraid of this movie. As a Kalamazoo resident, I was afraid I would only like it because it was in Kalamazoo. Then I realized I was afraid that I wouldn't like it ONLY because it was in Kalamazoo. The time it took me to work through that was the same time it took for me to get over the novelty of seeing my town on the big screen and the time it took for the characters to start to develop. And develop they did. Just having come from a high school reunion -- a few decades past the 10th -- I was pretty receptive to the theme, but I really wasn't prepared for the warmth and emotion surrounding the characters and found myself pulling for them. I was pleased that the high level of cinematography didn't make this feel like a small picture, and I was pleased with the brightness of the surrounding cast that helped strengthen the fact that growing up is about relationships, something that it takes several reunions for a lot of people to get. In that regard, the criticism that females were focused on the family part of their lives was off the mark. I would encourage our children, who are just in that 10th-range, to see the movie for just that message. Ultimately, though, it's not a message-movie, per se, but a movie that builds to make you feel for these specific characters. Very cool.
I saw Kalamazoo? at one of the premiere nights in Kalamazoo and truly enjoyed this film. Kalamazoo? is filmed entirely in where else... Kalamazoo, MI and features Michigan based bands on the soundtrack.
Three women attend their ten year high school reunion but realize beforehand the time capsule containing the surveys they filled out upon graduation would be opened on reunion night. Fearing that their failures might be embarrassingly revealed, they embark on a mission to "search and destroy" the capsule and it's contents before that fateful night.
Kalamazoo? IS a comedy and delivers exactly that! It's fun, humorous and chocked with wisecracks, one liners and a little slapstick but, not to the point where you want to be put out of your misery. The first three quarters of the film are fast paced and reinforced by the subplot of their deceased (and unseen to the trio) grandmothers supervising the "mission" but warned by their heavenly agent (Michael Boatmen) not to help in any way.
Just past the second third of the film, Kalamazoo? takes a dramatic turn and believe me, you can feel it coming and connect with it immediately! Lacking is profanity, nudity and abusive language which makes it viewable to family audiences. Fans of John Huges work will notice some of his influences here especially utilizing the city of Kalamazoo as a set. Huges uses Chicago and the suburbs in many of his films.
The screenplay provided by one of the principal cast members (Joanna Clare Scott) with story credit provided by sister Dana E. Kowalski provide comedy relief to the ten year high school reunion ritual we have either lived through or are soon to experience.
