Darwin's Game

An excellent series as long as you have a certain suspension of disbelief. There are a lot of impossible things to believe before breakfast. Survival of the fittest is obvious from the title. It reminded me of "The Game", that film from 1997 starring Michael Douglas. Of course, in that the confrontations were not deadly. They only made Douglas think they were. After all, this anime is supposed to be fun and exciting, not truly scary.

Schoolboy Kaname Sudou receives an invitation from a classmate to play the mobile game Darwin's Game. When Kaname opens the app, a snake erupts from his display and bites his neck, causing him to lose consciousness. He wakes up in the hospital room and realizes that he doesn't have a bite mark on his neck. On the way home, he reflects on his experience and dismisses the surreal experience as a hallucination.

Curiosity overcomes him on the train and he opens the app again. However, since this seems like any other fighting game, he breathes a sigh of relief and decides to start his first match. His initial relief is short-lived, however, as his in-game opponent unexpectedly appears right in front of him and tries to chase him with a knife. As he desperately runs for his life, Kaname puts two and two together and has to admit that Darwin's Game is no ordinary game, but a brutal struggle for survival.

"Darwin's Game" has nice fight scenes, but that's about all I can think of from the anime.

The characters are completely flat across the board and the main protagonist has a thick layer of "plot armor" It's ok, but clearly more could have been made of it.

Darwin's Game anime falls short of its source material, earning a 6/10 compared to the manga's stellar 9/10. While the anime stays true to the manga's story arcs, it lacks the gripping intensity that makes the manga a standout. The art style is serviceable but fails to elevate the experience, missing the detail and vibrancy found in the panels. Voice acting is decent, delivering the dialogue well, but it doesn't compensate for the lack of emotional engagement. Overall, it feels more like a summary than a reimagining. Without the "umph" to enhance the original, it struggles to leave a lasting impact.

The theory of natural selection, the stronger prevails and the weaker will be subdued. This anime is based on this theory, augmented with seals, special powers of each one, reformulating the conception of the strongest.

It is very worth watching, in addition to having fun, question your conception of the strongest, or of what strength really is.
