Captivating

Lei Yuan Bin was able to create a captivating documentary showcasing long takes of Bangladesh and Singapore in a way that I did not expect. With beautiful cinematography and using ambience noise in lieu of a soundtrack. This documentary says much by literally saying very little. Brilliantly edited, this documentary tells you the story of an injured migrant worker who waits to return home. As a Singaporean, it was eye-opening to see Singapore in from the perspective of a migrant worker. It was easy to feel the wonder and desire experienced by those who wished to work in Singapore. It was also heartbreaking to see the price some pay when they come to work in Singapore. This documentary is definitely a must watch for all.

Good material but not daring

The documentary shows a reality most Singaporeans do not think of or even realize. The reality of the 300k migrant workers, living with less rights than the others. They are invisible. But the documentary tries not to blame anybody, showing nice pictures of Singapore and Bangladesh, a very emotional NGO director who goes the full way to bring back one migrant work home in rural Bangladesh, his hands full of presents. The facts that his work incident cost is not covered by his employer, nor that Sing laws allows it? Not covered. The fact that useless workers are kicked out of countries after x days? Any stats on the number of similar incidents? Not covered. What are the fights of the supporting NGOs? Barely covered. That gives a bitter taste at the end, what was the director trying to tell us?
