Pontypool is the name of the setting, as well as the filming location, located in southern Ontario, Canada. The Canadian Pontypool is named after a small industrial town located at the eastern edge of the South Wales coalfields with links to the iron industry dating back to the early fifteenth century. In English the meaning of Pont y Pwl (original Welsh spelling) is (the) bridge (by) the pool (in the river). Founded in the 1870s Pontypool Rugby Football Club, a founder member of the Welsh Rugby Union, became synonymous with the immensely strong and tough men who played in the forward pack of the Welsh National Rugby team of the 1970s. Three men in particular, Bobby Windsor, Charlie Faulkner and Graham Price, became known as the legendary "Pontypool Front Row", a stalwart of the aformentioned national team.
