Well, hell. It's kinda ironic (yeah, I understand if you hate the word) that the director who first came to my attention through "Short Film" - the ultimate proud declaration of the values of cinematic ADD - would start his activities with "Duell in Griesbach", a film that is, while short (13 min, out of which roughly 10 minutes are dedicated to the actual story, if you pardon the pun), still feels rather drawn out for its rather meager subject matter.
Basically, it's all about some two old chicks from Germany living alone, feeling bored and having no one they can relate to, feeling like birds in a cage. Most of the film takes place in one day - one hour, even - and is dedicated to describing their apartments, their music listening, their nothing-doing, and, ultimately, their boredom. The detail in which all this is shown is typical of indie movies - or of your Bergmans and Hakekes. Basically, something to fill the length with, but also something to get you drawn in a kind of hypnotic cinematic trance. Finally, when, at the end (as usual!) some action happens - an old guy on the bike appears - you realize the point of what was happening, and why all the preparations made sense. You can even imagine a little back story for those two hags, with rivalry, jealousy and - of course! - boredom.
Pretty good stuff.
