Jhilli (Discards)

Jhilli - Discard is a story about slums and daily workers and their struggle with life. They live around us, walk beside us..but we never know their stories. This movie visualise us their daily life and skillfully attached us with their lives. With its captivating cinematography, strong character development, emotional depth and great performance by actors keeps the audience engadget from start to finish. I am a little bit unsatisfied with the storyline. With its outstanding sound direction I think the story can be explored much better in a different way..but I must say the performances are noteworthy, with each actor bringing authenticity to their roles. It's a must watch for those who appreciate thought-provoking Cinema that delves into the complexities of our society.

This film is a poetic work. The main interest in this work arises because the poetry is based on people living and loosing their life in midst of filth. Although the film is based on lives of people living in filth, the film portrays the warmth of these human beings. Their warmth comes out in distorted forms, in their slangs and abusive imaginations. The film is actually an epic, it contains elements which can change socio-economic reality. If many people watch this film I am sure the government of West Bengal will have to take the issue about garbage or waste collection much more seriously. The photography part of the film is really stunning. With excellent acting and appropriate script this film is an honest project on the life of those people who keep civilizations clean -- in doing so they themselves die young and live a life full of filth. A story worth saying.

The debut work of Ishaan Ghose compassionately exposes the underbelly of Kolkata, where the "light" of modern civilization has not yet reached, where dreams and desires are eradicated even before they are conceived, and where so-called sophistication has yet to gain a foothold. While the looming threat of corporatization terrifies the inhabitants of an uncertain future, their customs and hardships endure everlastingly.

A place where constant dread prevails, where despair and agony are part of everyone's daily routine, but their lives must go on, and their will to live and survive triumphs over nearly everything-every obstacle, every tragedy! Quite a powerful tale weaved around magical pieces of cinematography and entrancing music, only bereft of strong characters and a 'potent' narrative, but a promising debut nonetheless!

It's as raw and honest as one can get. Loved and was forced into a flurry of emotions throughout every bit of it. From the scathing beauty of humanity surviving in such squalor, to the labyrinth of cruelty and suffering. And the documentary like realism of it all.
