Enjoyable horror-comedy with some flaws but also laughs
The movie has a rather slow start and takes some time to get used to the characters and the situation they find themselves in, but once it gets going, it is actually quite entertaining. The humor mostly works, using a mix of slapstick elements and one-liners that are quite funny. It really reminded me of The Parenting (2025) and probably makes for a great double feature, since both are horror comedies featuring a gay couple as protagonists and have similarly enjoyable humor.
However, this movie does not fully succeed, and the dragging first act is especially tiresome to get through. The protagonists find themselves in a situation that immediately makes you think about what you would do, and while their actions were frustrating at first, I quickly realized that the film is not aiming for realism. The slapstick humor and silliness are front and center, and trying to apply too much logic would ruin the experience.
The movie also reminded me of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil due to the similar tone and some overlapping plot elements. I do not want to directly compare the two since Tucker & Dale is definitely the stronger film in terms of quality and comedy, but this still felt like a little love letter to that kind of horror comedy, which is rare to see these days.
The chemistry between Andrew Rannells and Nick Kroll is not perfect but still works well enough. I was a bit disappointed that Amanda Seyfried only had a minor role, as I would have loved to see more of her. At first, I was also let down by the lack of gore, and I still think the movie would have benefitted from more of it, but there is enough blood and carnage to satisfy horror fans like me.
Overall, this is a decent horror comedy with some good laughs. It is not really meant to scare but rather to entertain, and for the most part, I was entertained. [5.8/10]

Not as funny as I'd like
And that's why we should really do better background checks....
Had its moments but really wish it was a bit funnier in the first half. Takes so long to get going to anything you don't already have spoiled for you in the trailer, and really no memorable jokes or funny moments during the 30 minutes of set up for the film.
It's a funny enough premise and the final act was enjoyable as a what else could possibly go wrong sentimentality, but I just left wanting more.
If you are a Nick Kroll fan, you may still enjoy, but I think you'll find much better comedies and horror films (if I'd even really call it that) this year for sure.

Uneven But Carries Through
Tonally uneven, very choppy direction and at times a little distasteful, I Don't Understand You's blend of comedy and horror isn't as campy as David Joseph Craig and Brian Crano probably hoped for. The saving grace is the real authentic chemistry between Andrew Rannells and Nick Kroll who give it their full gusto even when the script makes no sense.
Loved it
Farce. I thought it was hilarious. It didn't take itself too seriously and I was entertained. Miscommunication is always funny. I don't know why people are beating it up. Were they expecting Woody Allen? Or Adam Sandler? Chill.
It reminded me of the old Chevy Chase movies after he left Saturday Night Live.

A film that deserves a rating below zero
This film doesn't even deserve a 1, it should have a negative rating. It is impossible to imagine that anyone could find this movie interesting in any sense, because it is boring, pathetic, and above all, plain stupid. There is no artistic, entertaining, or thought-provoking value here. My strongest recommendation is to skip it entirely. Honestly, it makes you wonder why anyone would even decide to make such a film in the first place (Even as a simple idea, it would have been better than what was actually made).
Wusstest du schon
- WissenswertesNick Kroll and Andrew Rannells co-starred in Big Mouth (2017), which released its final season the same year as the film's release.
