This is a movie that keeps your attention every moment with a story that is played out in so many families today. There is suspense as the girls face frightening situations. Maisie is the binding factor in the family and in spite of her young age (teenager) strives to keep her younger sister safe. Her portrayal is heartwarming and realistic, displaying strength and caring. The young actress who plays Cricket (younger sister) is so convincing and natural. I really enjoyed her. Finn, the rebellious brother, is realistically portrayed and the scenery of the West is stunningly beautiful. Most of the rest of the movie takes place in a poor community in the Midwest. I actually have been to some of those places so that was fun to see. The pace of the movie keeps the watcher's attention. The characters present people everyone has encountered in their life. The struggles of family are typical of nearly every family. The watcher is kept hoping that good can result for the family. The characters develop and change as the story evolves. I don't want to ruin the ending for anyone, but you may be surprised by the ending. The cinematography is that of a very well planned movie. I felt inspired that one person in a family can be the glue to keep things together. Go see it; you'll like it.
This is an engaging film focused on a broken family in rural Missouri. After watching this film, it is hard not to see hope in your own life or to appreciate your own family in a new way.
This film accomplishes this because it feels true to life in its characters, dialogue, and setting. Nothing feels forced. You can tell the filmmakers paid attention to every detail to ensure it was true to the place, characters, seasons, and realities of life. I love all the imagery and camera work, too. It showcases a region of the world (Southeast Missouri) that rarely is seen in the spotlight. This is a truly beautiful film and an indie gem!

I didnt know how much this film would deeply touch my heart and impact me the way it did..the locations..settings..props..etc were amazing along with the sugarhouse..
..it truly shows the reality of hardships some families can unexpectedly face. It also shows perfectly that with the hope and faith of God that he can help is through all seasons and how we praise him in those storms.... there were times i was on the edge of my seat with suspense and other times unexpected laughter and tears...The actors all did such a phenomenal job in their character role and the writers ..pure perfection..very powerful movie!

I loved this movie! It's so intense but that also makes it so good and makes it feel so real. The actors were amazing and so genuine. I'm so impressed! The picturing and scenery was beautiful and it all looks so professional. The main character and older sister was so amazing at bringing her hard tasks and responsibilities to the viewers hearts as she singlehandedly cares for her whole house and provides for her little sister who has scary seizures throughout the movie. This film also brings laughs along with the intensity of some scenes. The most important aspect is they show that trusting God might not always be easy when you can't always see that he's there, but he is!
I haven't seen a film like this in years. Well developed story and characters that I actually cared for. This is not your standard film but a story told with purpose and passion. I would highly recommend this movie. Sugarhouse is beautiful and moving, cinematic and human. It is told in an artful way and builds with intensity and actually surprised me. It is a human story with real problems, something I don't see much in films anymore. I'd say it has a universal audience, probably good for families with older children. Each family member has an issue and I felt that I related more to the character of Finn but my wife followed Maisie's story more. She even teared up several times. Love the twist at end, but I won't reveal it. It starts slow but builds in intensity and a rewarding climax. It reminds me of the great movies in the late 90's that had depth and just well crafted. The rural locations were beautiful and authentic and the changes in seasons was a unique way to tell a story. This is not your standard streaming movie, but an entertaining artistic film with a worthwhile message, a rarity in today's films. I wish we had more stories like Sugarhouse. I will definitely see this film again.
