I honestly think Elenescu Skinned Alive was terrible and didn't deserve any of the awards it got. I went in with high expectations because of all the hype, but it felt like a complete waste of time. The pacing was painfully slow, and the plot, if you can even call it that, was confusing and pretentious for no good reason. The characters were flat, and it seemed like the director was trying too hard to be "artistic" rather than telling a story that actually made sense. Half the time, I found myself checking the time, wondering when it would finally be over.
The cinematography was dark and shaky in a way that felt forced, and the dialogue was either too quiet to hear or so strange it was hard not to cringe. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters, and the film's attempts to shock the audience felt cheap rather than meaningful. I genuinely cannot understand how this film managed to win awards when it didn't deliver on basic storytelling, emotional connection, or even visual coherence.
Honestly, the best part of the entire experience was the comfortable seats I was sitting in, which at least made it bearable to sit through the mess unfolding on the screen. Other than that, I would not recommend this film to anyone, unless you're looking for an example of how a movie can fail while still pretending to be dee.

This film is a disgrace. A grim, disconnected mess that claims to be about George Enescu, yet does everything possible to strip him of his brilliance, dignity, and relevance. The actors deliver wooden, lifeless performances - often mumbling their lines to the point where entire scenes become unintelligible. The transitions between scenes are abrupt and nonsensical, like a bad fever dream stitched together without care or narrative logic.
Instead of exploring the genius of Enescu - his childhood talent, his connection with God and Romania, his obsession with music and family, his artistic madness while composing Oedipe for 20 years (nothing is said about how Enescu gave Oedipe a different ending, a new philosophical alure - unlike the ancient tragedies, he offered transcendence, not ruin), more thoughts he expose in his connection with journalist Bernard Gavoty, - we get a grotesque focus on misery, scandal, and nudity. The film centers more on Maruca Cantacuzino and her affairs, thoughts from her journal than on the music or Enescu himself. No inspiration, no passion, no truth - just a slow, sinister mockery. A terrible and broken image of a man who deserved reverence, not ridicule.
What's even more astonishing is that this film was presented abroad and toured through Romania as if it were some kind of national statement. But this film doesn't celebrate Enescu - it desecrates his legacy. There is absolutely no justification for taking this grotesque version of a national treasure and parading it on international stages.
This could have been a tribute to a titan of music. Instead, it's a tone-deaf, shallow, and frankly insulting portrayal. A total failure made by Toma Enache.
A mockery dressed up as cinema. Shallow, cruel, and unforgivable.

A bouquet of joy, emotional moments, and artistic sense - this is how I would describe this movie, which is, in fact, an experience. A brilliant blend of sensibility, spirit, wounded memories, and love, that offers the audience a key to Enescu's genius, accompanied by lovely visual shots and the era's gracious perfume.
Congratulations to the entire team for the incredible work, passion, creativity, and dedication!
The world should experience the magic you've created, especially the younger generation!
I still can hear "Poema Româna" playing in my mind...and in my soul...
It felt like poetry...

Enescu skinned alive - a film by Toma Enache
Finally a movie that made my whole being (mind-body-spirit) vibrating. A movie that is not about gangsters, guns and violence but about the art of music, love and beauty.
It is about the life of a genius Romanian classic music composer, his inner emotional univers, his struggles, his ups and downs in the world of creativity and recognition but also it is about the passionate love between him and the beautiful princes Maruca No, I am not gonna narrate the story in this movie but instead I am telling how this movie made me feel from the first music note till to the last one.
It was like my whole being was willingly kidnapped and flown away through a time tunel to the XIX Century. The decore, epoch costumes, interior decorations the streets of Paris with beautiful arhitecture or the rustic house with a beautiful garden in Moldavia where Enescu was born and spent his childhood, the magnificent palaces and concert halls, the elegance of beautiful women, the romantic evenings where piano was played by Enescu for the high class audiences.... all these has made me forget for 2 hours the present times where the soul of the world I live in has become poorer with each technological advancement and oh boy, I felt so happy for 2 hours when this movie helped me to escape it into a like fairytale world.
Assuming that each cell of the human body is a music instrument ... well, this movie has made all my "instruments" play and vibrate in a perfect, devine like, harmony with not even one false note.
The passionate love between Enescu princess Maruca has given the movie sweet, erotic, sometimes even dramatic flavors which I have absorbed with pleasurable emotions.
My mind was really impressed by the wisdom flowing out from the intelligent dialogues among the movie characters.
Yes, by making this movie the regizor Toma Enache has proven his dedication to perfection.
It was nothing I did not like about this movie,. Oh, yes I did not like when the movie ended and I found myself back in the present.
It was no wonder that this movie has been the winner of 45 international prestigious awards

Exceptional! I'm not sure if I dare make such a comparison, but it felt to me very much like Enescu's Oedipe-birth, rise, deception in place of triumph, downfall, and death. Sublime! It tells the story of Enescu's life, portraying him not just as a genius, but as a man-with all his struggles and depth-framing his tumultuous relationship with Maruca within the arc of his career. I learned so much about Enescu's life, and I really appreciate the message it conveys: to cherish our cultural values, not just by remembering great names from the past, but by truly understanding their journey, their sacrifices, and the legacy they left behind. It's a powerful reminder of how important it is to honor and preserve the richness of our heritage. I'm truly glad Romanian films are being made on such meaningful themes.
