The short film/documentary "The Proposal" didn't exactly resurfaced or went viral, as it was always there on the YT channel of Justin
Baldoni's producing company. What happened was the controversy surrounding him, Blake Lively and "It Ends With Us" behind the scenes allegedly
toxic environment, and people
are curious about him and his previous works, and since this one relates to a special event from his life, obvious that viewers will want to take
a look and see if there's anything odd about him, or if he's a genuine good guy. I'm gonna come back to this last bit; for the initial moment all
I can say is that sometimes there's no such a thing as a bad publicity, even though there are losses happening and maybe on the way.
This over-the-top yet curious and fun short film follows actor/director Justin Baldoni proposing to his wife Emily, back in 2013 (still married, by the
way), and the many unique ways he found to show his love to her, going from performing on music videos (boy band style, then a more sexy and romantic performance,
a flash mob with amazing choreographies performed by his friends; and the ABBA number which is hysterical, the wig falling off had me dying). Along with those
moments, Emily watches that epic video inside of a restaurant where they had their first date, and all her reactions are captured at the bottom of the screen.
While I'm a Grinch-like personality when it comes to certain cuteness and stuff (but deep down a helpless and incurable romantic), to the point
proposals don't affect me much, Justin conquered me a great deal when he moved from the corny performances and jumped to a thrilling and epic film trailer
where he needs to run to the restaurant as he's chased by a mysterious man - almost like a Matrix scenario. That was insanely fun to watch, surprises all the
way as a narrator and titles show his new challenge ahead with what marriage is about (or going to be). That's a whole new level of romance and one that could
inspire many people out there (if they can afford it). I simply loved it.
It's funny, charming, romantic, cute, filled with good intentions and surprises, slightly creepy with one certain sequence (the cemetery bit) and it's easy
to get involved with everything about it. And he's a helluva of performer, but remember this is halfway his required talents with singing and dancing, and halfway
the real deal of getting down on his knees, making a speech and proposing to the girl. It's weird that his career isn't bigger (or maybe it's my perception of such,
since I'm only hearing about him now, and it took me some time to notice I had seen him before way back in time, in "Everwood"), and a great pity if it ends (no pun
intended) because of weird PR gossip and stories. Yes, there's an on/off vibe with him but it happens to the best of us, liking or not, but in this short all one can
sense is a deeply committed guy, who likes to be larger than life with what he does, declare his love to his wife in that particular long manner, and feel great about making a fool of himself at times (romantic partners love that side). Highly eccentric,
but a fun and original proposal. 9/10.
