I went into this with zero expectations. I figured it was one of those tired formulaic movies where the family turns down a wrong road and are picked off by an inbred family. Without giving away any spoilers, let's just say to expect the unexpected. The twists were completely different from the norm and very shocking. The acting was well done and there really wasn't any bad acting in the entire cast. Usually with low budget horror flicks, the acting is usually as good as that of a middle school play. Some of the violence was over the top but I was warned that this was a slasher movie. I think this was good enough to have had a theatrical run. Yes, it was that good! I highly recommend it.
This series blew my mind. When I saw that it took place in Mississippi I knew that the principle prosecution would be slanted, to say the least. The arrogance of the so called forensic odontologist Michael West is astounding. Having been born and raised in Mississippi, I've come across so many doctors like him. I can't believe that when a second child was killed, they thought copy cat killer rather than the possibility that they prosecuted the wrong man! This series also shows that overworked public defense counselors cannot provide the same effective services for the poor as their well-paid counterparts can. It also shows the subtle racism that is rampant in the Deep South. I'm convinced that if these would have been white children, they would have focused on black men and not the white men who would have been involved in their lives.
This was a truly horrific incident that should not be forgotten. However, it went from being about the actual events and was more about the director insinuating himself into the picture and being an armchair quarterback. His thoughtless questions and suppositions were truly cringe-worthy. He seems to take offense that the police took their time in evaluating the situation but at the time, this was an almost unheard of occurrence. This could have been handled so much better by a more experienced documentarian. The use of continuous photos of the dead people inside and outside McDonald's was unnecessary and gratuitous at best. He did a true disservice to the victims and their families.
