  • Surely will be a classic

So many good things about Peacemaker. I'm not a super hero movie fan. Absolutely dire stories with two dimensional characters and using special effects instead of good dialogue and story.

Peacemaker is none of that and fundamentally is NOT a super hero series. Know what it reminds me of? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Peacemaker is character focussed, with excellent casting (every single one amhas an interesting and unique character, and funny characteristics). Indeed my favourite probably Economos who's simply a fat bearded middle aged man (though I also love Adrian). Peacemaket is excellently played by John Sena, as a sensitive though sometimes a bit dumb, 'hero' that is all too human. Very little of the story is about action, but the pacing is good, the humour consistent and original, and to be honest Season 2 episode 5 brought a tear to my eye at the end.

Just love the original story lines, and the interactions between the characters, with story arcs. Even the new characters in season 2 get interesting and unique personalities. Dann, even the Eagle is developing a background story.

Of course it's famous for one of hest intros ever made (in Season 1) which is also good, but not quite as polished for Season 2. Though the hunour and story, and story building, is just as good if not better in Season 2.

If you like a rag bag team that have their own personal problems working together despite their faults and only succeeding because deep down they care about each other, you'll love this. Great it doesn't tow the forced politically correct line, nor feels need to fight it.. simply a great great series. I'd say the worst thing is, I know one day the series will end and I'll miss it, but hopefully I will die before that day comes.

  • Good, but a little pacing problem toward end

Overall I really enjoyed this film. Focused on a woman from a tiny town wanting to make it as an actor in the big city, but focus on film his her part time work at a clinic where they use a dream state to heal people.

Lead actress was very good, and the story didn't have a Hollywood feel but instead seemed to evolve organically. In this way, it was never boring or predictable. Didn't focus just on scifi/horror element, but also this girl's feeling of isolation and struggle. Also had some interesting relationship arcs though they weren't really fulfilled or concluded.

I get the point of the ending, and it is one of these ones that u can still wonder what is real or not real, but I think, despite being somewhat satisfying, the ending was less interesting than the rest of the film. All the same, I recommend this film to watch, and indeed an surprised doesn't get a higher rating. Won't stay with you, but is a good film and did deserve awards it got.

  • Well made and interesting film

The film industry produces alot of films, and this is a good one. Everything about it was quality. Well cast (and nice to aee Jude Law again), beautiful dramatic filming of scenary as well as dialogue well filmed. Excellent pacing and not predictable. I felt the interactions between the well defined characters was fantastic such that it could easily be made into a stage play. To be honest I feel the whole team deserve to be congratulated on work well done.

Basis of story is a very private and intellectual doctor and his adoring wife go to the Galapagos and then a highly practical German couple arrive, followed by a very devious and morally dubious woman qnd her two lovers. What results is a character interaction which creates tension, drama and some twists.

  • Disappointing

I was looking forward to seeing Demi Moore, but then realised I never really liked her acting, The story is like a cheap idea about taking a drug that makes you younger but then there are terrible consequences. For me it was very two dimensional. The first half kept me engaged, but last 20 minutes I had no interest at all. Maybe 16 year olds will like it for some shock value at the weird scenes, but even the make up and effects didn't impress me. This is the type of film I'd take from the video store when all the good films had been watched. Anyway, if you're a teen or you're drunk, maybe you'll enjoy the film, but it wasn't for me (or my wife).

  • My favourite horror film, ever

OK, so when I was a kid I loved 'Jacob's Ladder' cos it was a good story and had an unexpected twist. It was my favourite horror film. This was replaced by Hereditary. The acting is great and you can't understand what is really underlying the story until closer to the end. It was beautifully revealed and the story is tight and satisfying, and as all good films should be - it has a good story regardless of the horror. Indeed I'm not really and blood and surprises horror fan. I like ghost stories or psychologically disturbing things, and this falls into the latter. It really portrays a sense of powerlessness against evil, but this feeling just develops. Great acting too. Please watch this film.

  • What a brilliant film

So some films are strikingly different and original, like Dune. Some films are great period dramas, some films are great science fiction concepts or original stories. Why is this film great? None of those things. This is far more subtle. It is great because it beautifully and gently depicts the struggles of a middle aged man balancing a failing Art Gallary, a wife in rehab, and tensions between an older adult daughter from a previous relationship and much younger twins. Through this, and despite forgetting commitments, he deeply loves those around him. To be honest, any adult man will recognise the stresses and strains of juggling family, career, and really loving and protecting those around him while being a strong and optimistic person.

Michael Keating is gold, and Mila Kunis is also brilliant. So at the start, it's a bit of a slow burn, but it is developing their characters in a slow thoughtful way, so as the emotional tension builds it truly is deeply touching. For me this is one of the most impactful films in the last 5 years in terms of subtle emotion and depth of human story - without necessitating huge dramatic events. I was so engaged in this film. As a 54 year old guy I was fighting back tears at times.

I'd just like to say a huge thanks to the actors in this film, the writer and the director. This film truly enriched my life and touched me. It's a travesty it gets a 6.5, but I guess it can be quite subtle at times, and maybe not the high drama that gets a broad range of audience to buy in. For me it is truly what good film is all about.

Some nice surprises and turns, some gentle moments, some sad moments, and some deep emotion expressed in a brilliant way. All round the actors (including the kids) were great. Who should watch this? Kids may not understand the relationship dynamics in this and find it dull. Anyone who's an adult, especially with children, should be deeply touched by this film. If that's you, go watch it. I think the least that will happen is that you'll enjoy it. But if you are like me, it could really touch your heart.

  • A beautiful beautiful film

Not sure why 'The Wild Robot' (a dire film for very young children) gets a higher rating than this film. This film I guess was made for adults (though definitely watchable by kids). I heard great reviews of this film, but I was dissapointed. It's about long lasting friendships and life and reminds me of the quality story telling that you get in some of the best Gibli animations. I can imagine seeing this film in 50 years time with my grand children and still thinking it's an amazing film.

So, the characterisation was great, the story was beautiful (sad and happy in parts, and some amazing beautiful and sometimes funny scenes). I need to keep track of the director because I'll definitely watch other films they've produced. I recommend this to adults, and adults with kids, because you'll both enjoy it (though probably the adults more). It's a touching and quite philosophical (in terms of reflecting on life and what binds people together) film and I highly recommend it. Not an action/romantic/cheesy film - instead it's what all films should be: a beautiful story, well told.

  • why the high reviews?

After watching the absolutely amazing robot dreams, I guess I was attracted to this film, thinking it would be similar. Unfortunately no. For me this film was unwatchable. I know it's for kids, but really it's for very young kids with no interest for even kids of 9 or more, let alone adults. 'Story' drags, mostly just reveling in some animation of this robot, but I feel it was such wasted effort in this film. I guess made me feel like I was watching teletubbies cos of the level of the story. Anyway, needless to say I regret watching it. Please, if you're an adult, watch Robot Dreams instead if you haven't seen it.

  • Maisy Stella really shone

I don't keep up with actors, but I don't know Maisy Stella, but she was fantastic in this role and indeed carried the film beautifully. Aubrey Plaza I think is an amazing and funny person, but not necessarily a great actress, however she was fine in this, even though not really 'funny', just some light comical parts. So basically Plaza plays Stella's older self who she sees during a 'shroom trip, and advises her on life. So ok, there's something Plaza is trying to get Stella to avoid, and to be honest, though it made some cry, for me it was sweet but not the main part of the film. More for me was just the interactions with her friends and a type of coming of age story for Stella, though more original and well thought out than most. The story was good and not cliched and I was engaged throughout. While not really breaking new ground, I feel the writers and directors did a great job and have good potential. I think if you're looking for something sweet, with some mild humour and are not put off by an occasional non-intrusive lesbian kiss that's intrinsic to the story, you'll enjoy the film (no - it's not a gay themed film). I guess the characters all fitted nicely together and it was unpredictable enough to enjoy watching all the way through.

  • well, nothing too exciting

I heard great reviews of this film, but I was disappointed. Andrew Garfield plays the most boring, softly spoken husband you can imagine. I guess the idea was to convey deep emotion, but he just came across as unemotional and a bit 2 dimensional. Florence Pugh was fine and quite an interesting character but the story was dull. Indeed, the story was very basic, even though in some ways original (Pugh being a chef). I don't have a clue why it jumped around to the past present and future - that served absolutely zero purpose.

Overall I'd say I did not feel for the characters, the movement between different times in their relationship was just a distraction and reduced the emotional impact, and what could have been a sweet story (though quite basic and predictable) ended up being somewhat monotonous. I would not recommend this film, even if you love romantic films. It's watchable on a Sunday afternoon if you're doing the ironing, but entirely forgettable.

  • Brilliant brilliant film

A simple story of a preacher going to a colony in New Zealand starts to reveal his own painful past, the brutality of the waring Mauri and the ruthlessness of the British making money in an enclave where no formal legal system exists. This is not an action film, it's a character study with people revealing their suffering and motivations gradually. Such a brilliant film, with careful characterisation, top notch acting and turns of events that are at once natural, unexpected and containing heartfelt pain. In a way this can be viewed as a historical insight into those early British far flung colonies and the conflict and problems, but extracated in a way which is deeply personal. A very powerful film while not forcing anything nor having any underlying politics (which has ruined so many films in the last decade). Deserves mutliple awards and I hope this will be shown in schools for its sensetive but stark vision of Mauri life and the precipitous lives of British first settling in New Zealand. Everyone over 16 who has a heart and a brain should watch this.

So I only really likes the first mad max, cos was original. For me it's same dystopian future with not much story, some car stunts and non sensical violence. I guess was more of the same. Characters are so artificial I never feel anything for any of them. If you like Madax I guess you'll like this, and yep the filming is nice in parts, but the dialogue, the story, the depth, is so lacking when you consider it just as a film. Anyway. It's Mad Max.

So also I need 150 more characters here but I've nothing more to say. There's plenty of sand, if you like sand. You need more than this? Don't see the point.

  • Wow - touching film, well acted

So, I like Cannevale and feel is a pretty underrated actor, so was pleased to see him in this. A film about a comedian father and his autistic son, and how is tries to protect him.

Man, did this film hit home with me. No, I don't have an autistic son, but I have been through the absolutely ridiculous problems you get from authorities when all you want to do is protect your children (I lived with a wife with mental health issues who was very violent and when I tried to get help from social services they ignored all the police records and just considered me the problem because I am a man.. when they realised by wife had depression and mild psychosis, she ran away with the children and the same negative attitude towards me as a man just started all over again. All I can say - if you are a man, don't have kids in the UK as you have no rights.).

So basically that aspect of the film where he is defying the ridiculous and thoughtless decisions of authority and the feeling where you're the only one that wants the best for your kids but you're prevented from protecting them, was very well written.

Anyway, watch this film if you like good acting, interesting story and family drama that's beautifully written. I cried twice during the film, and I'm a 52 yr old male. Kids will find this boring as will those that are seeking a comedy or action (the guy is a comedian, but the film isn't a comedy).

  • A missed opportunity

Wolf like me isn't bad. The little girl actress annoys me for some reason. The male lead is a bit dull as a character, which is intended, but still makes him boring. The female lead is ok, but doesn't seem to really fill the role. It's not a typical werewolf type series, and is more for adults: going through relationship and family problems as well as the problems of one being a werewolf. I think the concept is very good.. a more serious look at how a woman copes when ahe has to eat live meat every month, and her isolation from others. It's almost sweet. I sau almost coa despite a good concept it doesn't fully utilise it. The episodes are short but drawn out. The depth of emotion isn't quite reached. Some of the writing is just a bit lack-lustre. For example, and extended scene in episode 5 shows how the couple and daughter make a nice family, watching an animal docuementary together, at a fairground together etc. Nothing at all original. I feel this could really have been a really impactful series, but it settles for mediocre. I'm still watching it, but it's one of those series that I'll probably give up with before reaching the end and not miss it. Who should watch it? Adults that like simple relationship stories with a superficial pinch of fantasy. Try it, I expect you'll feel the same as me.

  • Sweet, sad guy in a weird turmoil

Nicholas cage, unlike the mass of b-movies he's always doing, acted well in this as the unfashionable and unattractive professor. As an ecologist myself I laughed at some of the stuff, especially the lack of credit for his work (I wrote a whole report for a team, and female team lead just places her name first). Anyway, it was an interesting story, looking at how a society condemns a man for not actually doing anything wrong himself. Reflects on how irrational people are. While some nice sequences with some humour at times, I felt it misses something. Maybe another layer to the story or subplot. Ot was just about this guy that unwittingly appears on people's dreams. Acting was good. Interesting progression of the film. Had feeling of '...of the spotlessind' but story very different. For me, it was worth a watch and a good production. But it's not a masterpiece. Cage's acting was probably the best thing about the film. If you like a popular film that's a bit offbeat and am interesting concept (but not alot of story) you'll like it. If you're above 14 I think most people will enjoy it, but don't expect too much, even though most won't hate it either.

  • Clever, well made

If you watch the trailer, you'll see how it is filmed in a 70s pastiche, but excellently done. From the crackling film to the fonts used in the titles, the panning of the camera, the type writers, the scenes, this was expertly filmed. Indeed even the story line brings you back to an era where people made proper stories for their films. Certainly the best antidote to DC and Marvel universe CGI rubbish.

So, the acting was spot on. Although the three leads were all good, Da'vine managed to get a sob out of me at one particularly moving moment. In no way does it work hard to get emotional effect, it is subtle and shows the beauty of each of the characters hearts, though each one is pretty unsightly in their own way (skinny tall teen, cock-eyed teacher, overweight cook). The supporting characters were also interesting, but the main story revolves around the developing caring relationship between the grump lonely teacher and the dejected and rebellious skinny teen. Definitely a worthwhile watch, especially on a Sunday afternoon and especially if you're over 40 and can appreciate how well they've made it look like a film from the 70s. Overall quite heart warming and touching without being at all cheesy. Congratulations to the team that made this.

  • Good, different, but non-conclusive

Eisenberg and Brody are great actors, and are also great here. Eisenberg portrayed a complex, unpredictable uncomfortable character. It's not like fight club, not about toxic masculinity. It's about a deeply disturbed and shy man who's life is not under control and he gets involved with this group who are supportive and feel themselves outcasts from society, but seems he doesn't even connect with them too well. It's not bloody or excessively violent, though it is a bit dark in places and a few people are shot.

To be honest, it felt very original, but also quite risky from the director. The main character is obviously struggling with some inner demons, but we never find out what that is, and though there are strong hints, the film in many ways felt in-conclusive. In some ways this was good - it's like life; we rarely find easy solutions. There were some unexpected turns of event in the film, and there is a sense of underlying theme of men caring for and feeling the suffering of other men, and the struggle that men have in a society controlled by women's desires and needs. However, it didn't feel like a single story in the end, but more like a snapshot into some messed up kids life as he struggles to deal with his feelings of worthlessness. If it a good movie? It's different, I think it's something that could be studied in a film class, but fundamentally I think many people will find it a little depressing, inconclusive and unsatisfying. I'm glad I watched it, but you're not going to finish the film feeling upbeat or happy.

  • Amazing season 2

Season 1 was watcheable and a novel amd interesting structure. There was a murder, and the protagonist female cop interviews people on the house before her boss turns up. She's charismatic, quirky and fun. Each person remembers the night of the murder differently (am interview for each episode) and, with some humour, she pieces together the evidence. It's well acted, interesting and great idea to see the same event from different perspectives, slowly releasing both clues about the murder, and details about the people's inter-relationships.

Season 2 is the same structure. A new murder, at a wedding. To be honest I felt less interested in who was the murderer, than just understanding how the characters fit together. Season 2 is a level above season 1. The actors are amazing. The characters are all unique and special and interesting. What I really love is the clever dialogue: witty, at times funny, and indeed the interviews not only reveal details but say very much about the characters and how they think about themselves. Awkward fat guy seeing himself as a bit of a detective from a crime noir film, for example. I certainly think second season should win awards. Original approach, great dialogue, lead and co-lead are fantastic; korean guy is very funny and great actor, and each episode is gripping, interesting and funny all at the same time. Hats of to the writers and production team too. Writing this review before the conclusion of season 2, but some of the episodes already are amazing. Also, I loved the music (classical style, but great composition).

  • Off-beat, drab but interesting

So all based in very grey offices where we don't know what work they do. A narrative voice (protagonist) throughout, but given that it is like a study of this man, but through his own eyes, seems necessary.

Having known a schizophrenic, the behaviour and response to those around him seems very much the case. For example "She told me her name, Elisa. But I had nothing to say about her name so I didn't amhave anything to respond".

I'm really getting to love Jon Hamm. He's had some great roles recently. I think he plays this well, in the drab, strange way. Another actor could have easily pushed this into comedy, which it isn't. This is not a depressing film, but also not a fun film. It is more like a character study. I enjoyed it, and I think it has alot of merit for originality, performance and dialogue. However, kids and adolescents will hate it. Adults that want fun, action or humour will hate it. It's not an 'artsy' film, but it is interesting. I recommend to serious adults that have worked in an office under excessive beurocracy, and maybe are interested in the view of life through the eyes of a repressed schizophrenic.

I would love to have given it a 7, as that was its value to me, but I think lack of general commercial appeal brings it to a 6.

  • only film I've ever given 10 stars

This is a beautiful film. It's funny, not too heavy, but the acting is great, and the story is lovely and well put together. Not sure how they did it, but for me it hit all the right buttons. Jennifer Lawrence should get an oscar for this film. I know she won't, because it's not that type of film where people are clamoring for oscars (ie with lots of CGI or with over-emotional angst). However she plays her character of a down on her luck beach bum that needs a car, has a fun character, but deep heart, sooooo well. I was literally transfixed, and when I turned to my wife to ask her about the film, I saw she too was transfixed. I never really rated her much in previous films, but either she has really grown as an actress, or the role was just perfect for her.

So, premise is that woman needs to date this guy on behalf of his parents (to bring him out of his shell) so that they'll give her a car. However, the interaction between the leads is at once funny and beautiful. I think because it is a little non-conventional without being arty (very young guy with older woman) and didn't over-egg any of the important points it was making in any way, it made it a very touching film for me. Totally non-superficial, non-arty, non-gritty, just perfectly made film. Cuedos to the writer and director too.

Who will enjoy this - absolutely everyone. Has nudity and sexual references (obviously) but no sex scenes, so not suitable for very young kids. Some of the scenes were hilarious and I'll remember for a long time, but I don't want to mention them here as it may spoil it. Supporting actors were also cool and played well.

Simply watch this, and be transfixed.

  • a breath of fresh air

I'm really starting to like Jon Hamm in his recent movies. He plays a calm mature and sweet man very well. This time as a policeman. If you are tired of CGI films without a story, of Hollywood pap that just wants kids through the doors, try this film.

So it's a murder mystery (for the policeman, the viewer knows who did it, but its nice watching them go through the process). Also, there are novel and interesting characters that interact beautifully. To be honest all the characters were acted well, and half the film really is about the dilemmas of the 4 or 5 key characters. Although there are some deaths, its not excessively gory and it isn't an action film. Reminds me a bit of the murder mysteries we'd see in the late 80s, but in this story is much better, characters are 3d, and filming very polished. Yep, the story is a little quirky, but pretty believable. There is a romantic sub-plot, which is complicated by one being a widower, and the other being divorced, but it takes on some modern themes very well.

For me a good film requires a good and well told story, with good characters. This is what this film is. No high drama (except may a little toward end, and a bit of a surprise), but I loved the way it was presented and paced. Made it feel like real life without being dull at any time. Maybe the film is an 8, but I gave it a 9 just because it was laid out so well and skillfully.

Maybe people under 25 will find it slow or no dramatic enough, but I think most older people (male and female) will find this a fulfilling film covering a few interesting themes and with an interesting murder mystery aspect. Comedy? Not really, though some light touches which are sweet/funnyish. Go on, give it a go.

  • Relies on a charicature of black american culture

To watch this film you need to be obsessed with blackness, low IQ and completely stoned.

I like black (by which I mean black american) comedies and romantic comedies, and accept that there is some stupid (often drug related) humour, amd that's part of the fun. They're fun films.

This seemed to start well (ish) but degraded into some sterotype of black american culture, inferring that it's a trite, woke, superficial, and anti-intellectual culture. I guess cos the film revolves around a game where people get killed if they can't answer black culture questions, combined with a pretty weak plot and jokes that don't really work, as well as 2 dimensional people, it just overall comes over as a disappointing and boring film. If this film gets televised, I'm sure people would be looking forward to the adverts. Will anyone enjoy this? Few people I expect, just the drunk and/or stoned. Not recommended.. watch something like We Have A Ghost or there was another spooky black comedy which was pretty good last year too.

  • Watchable

The premise is that this is a woman on the run, who solves murders because she can tell when people are lying. She's also super observant amd has a great memory for detail. Obviously a homage to the 70s and to Columbo. She has a similar offbeat character, speaks a little strange, is an outcast, pauses as she's walking out of a door to ask the most important question that blows open the case.

It's well paced and interesting but the story is intriguing but not necessarily intelligent. There is no real build up in the episodes of particular climax.. a murder happens, you then see where she was at the time (often around the same area, but wasn't evident in the original presentation of the scene, then she deduces how the person was killed. Because we know at the start, and because there aren't any real reveals, the drama aspect isn't quite there. However her character is idosyncratic and thus interesting. Indeed it's interesting in the way that say, the new Equilizer series is interesting ie a relaxing story you want to follow but not entirely gripping.

Similarly to Columbo there is little progression between episodes and they're more or less stand alone. This may disappoint as limited character progression (and she's the only one that is the same in each episode, as she moves to different towns). This lack of requirement to be gripped to a continuous plot also has advantages though . You can watch as you want without having to remember what passed before.

Should you watch it? Yep, I think most people will like it, but while the concept is novel, it's not something that is ground breaking or will leave you gasping for more. So go ahead.. it's watchable.
