He supported the Labour Party and campaigned for Ken Livingstone in the London mayoral election, 2012. However, in 2013, he signed a letter in The Guardian stating he had withdrawn his support from the Labour Party, in favour of a new party of the left.

His 1/15/14 death was a mere 11 days before the 1/26/14 death of fellow Harry Potter y el cáliz de fuego (2005) cast member Margery Mason (the Trolley Woman on the Hogwarts Express).
