He was the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine (1973).

He chose to be buried in the graveyard of St John's Church, Holmfirth, Yorkshire - filming location for the long-running sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine (1973), in which he played "Clegg" - in the next grave to his friend and fellow Last of the Summer Wine (1973) actor, Bill Owen, who had died in 1999.

He did some dubbing work on the English soundtrack of Orson Welles' movie El proceso (1962), flying to Paris for a few days to do so. In 1983 he appeared in a live production of Last of the Summer Wine, known informally as the "summer season" which was a stage show produced in Bournemouth. While Bill Owen and Sallis reprised there roles as Compo and Clegg, Brian Wilde chose not to take part because of personal differences with Owen.

In 1961 Sallis appeared in Jango (1961) in the episode Treacle on Three Fingers (1961). In fact the episode Treacle on Three Fingers (1961) is the only episode of Jango (1961) that has survived out of all eight episodes produced for the series.

Sallis had two grandchildren from his son Crispian Sallis.
