Portly, round-faced British character actor. Studied music as a child and performed as a concert pianist in Australia from the age of 11. Appeared in cabaret and in concert halls, becoming a character actor in the 1930s. Played Shakespearean roles on stage and specialized in seedy types in British films and television.
