Running on Climate

Watching Running on Climate was an inspiring experience.

Alstead's film reminded me of the serious realities our earth is facing and the importance for me to do my part, while highlighting how committed individuals and communities - like Andrew Weaver and the Green Party - are making a difference. Visually engaging and informative, Running on Climate moved me, kept me interested in following the storyline and kindled a desire to become more actively involved. I left the theatre feeling hopeful, despite the gravity of the subject matter of climate change.

This film is a must see for all.

A wonderful film and brilliantly directed regarding the most important topic that not many would like to, frankly, speak and think about. However, the protagonist of this film is keen to do so and does what he thinks is necessary in an incredibly articulate, compassionate, and determined way to affect a change, and the director allows his subject to do so in such an effortless and unencumbered manner. This all leads to a simple, honest and beautiful message of hope to all and, especially, the younger generation, who will have to continue the challenge of this delicate topic of climate change. Take 80 minutes of your time to watch this wonderful message of hope and to educate yourself on what is affecting your life and the life of your children.

What grabs you right from the get-go is the story line of a novice candidate running to unseat a secure, long-time incumbent. It quickly deepens into the transformation story of a scientist fed up with elected decision-makers ignoring science, who decides to take the leap and go for government himself. This personal saga of determined, and sometimes humorous, persistence provides the central theme. Along it are arrayed several sub-plots on conflicts of interest between environment and economy and the people who are committed to addressing those conflicts. More than a green-theme film, it is very much a story of populist democracy in action that outraged, amused and engaged me to the end.

I was surprised that this documentary of the election campaign of a climate scientist to a Canadian Provincial Legislature could have so much friendly humour in it. Sure there was coverage of the climate crisis, that was expected, but I didn't feel as if I was getting brain surgery. It was a people story and the personalities were given as much focus as the storyline. The pacing of Running On Climate was well done and the there were themes both poignant and humorous woven nicely throughout. This movie is a gift to climate activists and Green candidates everywhere -- nothing like a dandy triumph-in-spite-of-the status- quo story to liven up the motivation. I helped to crowd-fund this movie and came away from the showing feeling good about that.

Running on #Climate (www.icycle.ca) is a brilliant film about a #nobel prize winning #climate scientists who decided to crash local politics because this emergency is being ignored.

It's entertaining, delightful and balances the science behind anthropogenic global warming with the drama of running (& winning) a seat in Canada's British Columbia Parliament. (That beautiful outback in the Pacific Northwest.)

Andrew Weaver is a strong, energetic character, who's intellect, enthusiasm and homegrown advantage ensures that he wins with a landslide, resulting in one of the highest voter turnouts for Victoria. He becomes Canada's 1st ever Green MLA.

Laugh and chuckle while discovering how serious climate change is. Whether your an environmentalist or not I fully recommend watching. Rating: 9/10; category: must see.
