I'm usually more a fan of British crime series and films but this German TV production totally overwhelmed me.
Alex Schwarz who served seven years in jail for the murder of his wife, suddenly gets discharged for some mistakes in his trial. He always denied the crime. Of course no one is happy with this outcome, everyone believes a murderer is now at large. Only his brother backed him up throughout these years. His two children have been raised by his sister-in-law and her husband. She hates him and did her best to put the wages against him in the original trial.
The police has to start anew for the new trial. The commissar who did the first investigations has to step down and another one, his girlfriend, steps in. She is determined to start from scratch and tries to avoid following her boyfriends prejudice towards the husband. While she and her team dig deeper and deeper, it becomes clear that many important questions and witnesses have not been taken into account. Schwarz wants his children back and has to prepare for a new trial. His children are indoctrinated by his sinster-in-law that their father had murdered their mother. And former friends turned his back on him and it becomes clear that some had a reason for it...
Sounds very much like true crime and it has this feeling although it is not. I had to think of Broadchurch, the British series, that had a similar feeling. The acting throughout is very convincing, asspecially Klare as Alex Schwarz and Anna Loos as the sister-in-law gave performances that you don't forget easily. There are more to praise but I don't want to give too much away. Look out for this gem!
