This series is meant to be based on the non-fiction book by Nahuel Gallotta, the "Bogotá Connection". I don't believe it. We are told at the beginning that any resemblance to living people or to incidents is accidental and that the account has been fictionalised. I'm quite sure that the writers of the series drew on the circumstances outlined in the book as an idea, but the characters are completely imaginary.
Another reason for doubt is the absurdity of the plot. That a successful international criminal would choose the four deadbeat slumdogs that he did to become international criminals alongside him defies belief and reason. One is a nasty oik who challenges authority and guidance, another is a hopelessly cocaine-addicted closeted gay, another on a vengeance mission, as is the boss. The group is all but uncontrollable and wrecks heists willy-nilly with their impetuousness.
The series gets off to a rather slow start, as is normal, so that we can be introduced to the characters and their back stories. Things pick up in episode two and the episodes are rolling along until number six, which is the weakest of them all. After that, we are on a rollercoaster until the end.
It's all meshed in with a plot that involves Argentinian politics and the legal profession and the ambitions of members of the elite there. Their paths cross with those of the "Internationals" on several levels, criminal, historical and personal.
In the end, some people get their just desserts - what series of this type would not end in this way - and others are rewarded.
It's all fanciful and not very realistic. There are too many coincidences and hairsbreadth escapes. With the deficiencies of the gang, it's simply not credible that they did so well. Aspects of the back stories are also not particularly believable either.
Nonetheless, I watched it all and sometimes was on the edge of my seat. There were plenty of loose ends though by the end. These weren't cliffhangers by any means, just things that the directors and writers hoped that we would forget about. So I doubt that there will be a season two.
All I can say in the end is what was on my report card at school so often, "Could do better".
