For some reason, Jules White felt that service comedies worked well for Joe Besser. He made three service comedies with Besser and remade two of them. (Besser only starred in ten solo shorts before joining Moe Howard and Larry Fine for the final sixteen Three Stooges films!) This one is a remake of "Dizzy Yardbirds". The original film seems to be unavailable for viewing at this time. "G.I. Dood It" was part of the package of comedies released to television by Screen Gems. The new footage brings White back to the world of the Dogville comedies he directed for MGM in the early 1930s. Only animal haters could really like these two-reel "dogs". Much of the footage is merely lifted from "Dizzy Yardbirds" and the new footage is flat and unfunny. The final punch is a bit of a downer.

Before Joe Besser became the guy who replaced Shemp Howard as the third Stooge, he made a string of solo shorts for Columbia...the same studio that made the Three Stooges films. Most of Besser's films for the studio (with and without the Stooges) were poor and many of these were remakes of previous films. "G. I. Dood It" is a worse remake than most because it's a remake of a film Besser made just five years earlier for Columbia!

Most of the film consists of scenes lifted directly from the 1950 film. They added a prologue explaining why the sergeant hated Joe so much and a dog....but it's essentially the old film. It's a great example of lazy filmmaking and the studio SHOULD have been ashamed of themselves. But considering how often they did this, I bet they were laughing all the way to the bank!
