Treehouse of Horror XIV continues the long-standing Simpsons Halloween tradition, which is impressive in itself given how many years the series has managed to keep it going-even through the weaker entries. Unfortunately, this one lands more in the "so-so" category, with its scares and satire feeling a bit routine. Once again, it aired in November, which dampened some of the spooky spirit. Still, there's fun to be had, especially with Professor Frink's father-voiced by Jerry Lewis-making an appearance in a loving nod to Lewis' own comedic style.
The middle segment, a Clockstoppers parody featuring Bart and Milhouse freezing time for mischief, has some laughs but doesn't quite reach its full potential. The final segment, where Homer becomes the Grim Reaper, feels more like a familiar Homer power trip than a clever Halloween twist. What truly stands out is the opening, where Kang and Kodos humorously mock the show for airing a Halloween special so late. That bit of self-awareness captures the best of what Treehouse of Horror does-making fun of itself while still celebrating the absurdity that's kept fans tuning in for decades.
