El Jardin aka: Narco Killer

I don't write a whole lot of reviews but this movie really surprised me and is worth mentioning. I was expecting a cheap and bloody production to pass some time, yet this exceeded expectations. There actually is more heart to the story, and not too much violence, and in a good way. Yes, blood will be shed, but tears as well. The finale showdown(s) don't follow a typical hollywood mold, yet fit in with the theme. Revenge, redemption, courage, and family are all treated equally. If there's one criticism, there is some overacting on the part of the primary bad guy, however this is compensated by overall strong performances.

Had it only been an original action movie I would have given it seven stars. The director is really good at it. Like a young Roberto Rodriguez. But the first very long part on an avocado plantation with boring and badly drawn parents/ farmers almost made me quit watching after 10 min. Having this terminator scicario hunting down the three kids, who must kill the narco boss who massacred their parents before he skills them, is a great spinoff on this type of American revenge movie. But I did not feel enough for the kids so there should have been a smart and funny voice over at the beginning to make them into humans you care for - - it could have been achieved with only images but in this case it would have been necessary with a powerful intro voice over to make you feel for them and want to know they will be fine. Otherwise, you do not care about the movie.
