Written and directed by the accomplished Osayande Agbontaen and shot in Johannesburg, South Africa, the 12-episode series "She Was My Best Friend" offers a consistently accumulating intensity in what turns out to be a terrific and pressure-packed iteration of the murder-mystery vehicle.

Captured with a vibrant and nocturnally dark energy -- and largely within interior settings -- "She Was My Best Friend" methodically unpacks the murder of a female within a group of five friends. After those that remain find her dead, they're seen fleeing the scene by a neighbor who reports the crime to police. Accordingly, the four friends are all equal suspects.

Throughout its twelve episodes, themes of power, deceit, and violence bubble to the surface of this engrossing series. The acting is particularly elite: Agbontaen has sourced a thoroughly talented ensemble cast here, and he provides them with truthful, hard-hitting dialogue that's leveraged to the fullest. U.S. viewers will also find the edgy locales of Johannesburg to be a refreshing tonal escape from the sameness that can arise from consuming entertainment only of American origins.
