I'm writing this review as an audience who hasn't watched the original.
Mid way through the film you will realize, the plot is nothing new. It deals with a serious social issue related to women in villages and even cities till date. However, the way the film moves forward makes sure that you are still invested in the film despite knowing what is to come.
The setting of this film is amazing, a house in between tall grasses, perfect setting for a spooky film. But I'll be honest, there are only a few jumpscares thanks to the loud jumpscare music that helps. Once, the back story starts to unravel, the horror dissappears completely. However, the way the back story is revealed is something I really liked. That is what kept invested even after knowing what's coming .
The climax final revelations are shocking . However, the treatment is not up to the mark. You feel that impact missing solely because the last revelations are shown as mere montages and not fully fledged sequences. Had they shown a full sequence, the impact would have been much more hard hitting and emotional sadly that emotion is less , if not missing completely. Being promoted as a horror, there is not much of it.
Nushrat bharucha till date can't convince me that she is 35+. She looks so young in films and here, her role is kind of a challenging one and she's done a good job. Mita vashishth is a show stealer, from her accent to her way of talking impressed me . Rest everyone were good too.
Overall, a film that can definitely be watched its not at all a torture or any sort of thing like that . Watch it for the issue dealt with the film, watch it for performances, don't expect too much of horror or spine chilling moments and yeah, the director could have treated the climax much better.

This movie is not only a suspense horror movie but at the same time it's a movie with a big social message. Nusrat Barucha has shown her finest work here. She has made u feel the emotions through her acting. Yes it was scary at so many places and this is the plus point of this movie tat made u hooked to it till the end.
First half is little bit stretched unnecessarily otherwise it's a good movie to watch. The only negative point about this movie is it's screenplay is slow paced especially in first half, and in the 2nd half it's quite gripping and plot unfold gradually. Nushrat Barucha did a splendid job here and other supporting characters also did their jobs perfectly in this entire movie. I will say, it's absolutely fine to watch it with family and friends. You will like it's 2nd half and ending as well because it have a good social message at the end with justification.
This was a fun Indian folk horror with a pertinent and important message in their culture today. Being American and not well versed in Indian cinema, I will not be commenting on many stylistic attributes because it feels ignorant when I am not familiar with their style. I also have not seen the original. I tried to watch that first but it is not available anywhere at the moment.
And you could certainly tell this was not in the syle of a western film. The way it was shot, looked, edited... most of it in general... and I enjoyed that and found it refreshing.
I am partial to folk horror so I quite enjoyed this story. It definitely had some solid spook throughout while also leaning heavily on jump scares. Cool sfx and makeup at times as well. It's not my favorite when all the exposition takes place in the form of a drawn out monologue and that was what was done most of the movie, but it was still a good story regardless.
The acting seemed solid all around. Everyone was like, oddly attractive and put together at all times which again might just be Indian Cinema idk haha.
I think this would have been a lot more successful if it was trimmed down. There just really wasn't much of a reason for the 2hr run time. Lots of drawn out and unnecessary scenes. Still successful regardless and would recommend.

A dark truth which is still in the society shown here, beautifully made, with good horror and it will keep your eyes wide open.
As for those with reviews asking for banning the movie, get a life seriously. The truth is still there and cant be hidden.
Would never thought but one brilliant and strong performance by Nushrratt Bharuccha, she is certainly proved her metal.
Mita Vashisht, acted superbly too and was the key element in the movie.
Dont miss this one.
