My review was written in March 1984 after watching the show on Vestron video cassette.
"Ultraflash!", billing itself as "the dancemusic video", is an arresting and entertaining video cassette program that does not fit into any of the current bestselling categories. It is not an exercise-related tape nor a video 45, though bearing a resemblance to the latter in compilation form. Format is nine songs presented as vehicles for a handsome set of femme dancers to strut their stuff in numbers choreographed with the hit film "Flashdance" in mind.
Top terping in the program is provided by Neisha Folkes of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and break dancer Gena D'Orazio, with very sexy (terrific eye-contact with the camera) turns by Helen Riser, Diane Cossa, Madalyn Carol and B. J. Brown. Well-paced tape, climaxing with a fun segment of seven girls in a dance-off in front of a still photographer's lens is well-made with minimal but atmospheric sets.
Weakest aspect of the show is the music, with rhythm songs by groups such as Troublemaker, The Real Thing and Cloud 3 lacking the excitement of top music videos, which depend on their popularity as much for the underlying song (and group) as for imaginative visuals.
