I wasn't sure if I was supposed to laugh as much as I did watching this. Yes, there were some serious parts but a lot of it is pure comedy. From the beginning when Jamal's friend was trying to grab the microphone, that part is HILARIOUS! Then later when he says that K-Swiss is better than Nike, I laughed out loud literally. I enjoyed watching this but think they should reconsider the genre and make it a comedy. Even the "deep" moments have a comedic nuance to them. The table scene was another part that had me dying laughing, there's no way you can tell me this isn't a comedy. Trevor's father is funny as hell. He's like an Archie Bunker of today. Trevor's mom and that axe! Please re "genre" this film, I think people would see it differently if they knew if it was okay to laugh.
I'm the type that appreciates independent art. The storyline was easy to follow and I felt like I could relate to the drama. The actors were good for it to be a cast full of none "Hollywood" people. The cinematography was okay, there were no shots that were too dark. This was one of the best I've seen. The music was very catchy and each song gets stuck in my head. The characters are extremely relatable. After seeing the credits at the end, I appreciated this movie so much more. The writer and director is the same person that wrote the songs! That's amazing for talent to be set into one individual.
Regular themes mixed with modern day sensibilities that is horrible. It's like watching paint dry. I had no empathy for the characters and couldn't wait for this fiasco to be over. The musical numbers were not even on par with the best high school performances I've witnessed. When it was over I kept saying that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. This story could of been told in half the time. It just seemed that the director rushed the shoot and no one bothered to push the actors to deliver honest emotional performances. It was amateurish at best. As I watched the musical numbers I kept thinking this can't be choreographed only to watch the end credits to realize it was to my dismay. I hope the writer, producer, and director keep trying to develop but this is just plain awful.
I'm actually from the place where this takes place, Kankakee Illinois. It's super cool how they showed different places in the area in this film. Though Kankakee Illinois University (KIU) is not real, it was cool to see. Am I the only person that felt like the coach was creepy from the start. There was something about his vibe that just rubbed me the wrong way when we first meet him. With all the things that's coming out about celebrities these days, I can believe that these types of things happen for real. Over all this was a pretty descent movie, I'd watch it again for sure. I wonder if there would be a part two to this?
Good Enough: A Modern Musical is ranked among my top favorites as of now. The music, an infectious blend that implanted each melody in my mind, showcased a level of artistry that resonated deeply. The characters, brimming with relatability, etched themselves into the narrative, creating a lasting impact. What truly enhanced my appreciation was the revelation that the writer and director were one and the same, a testament to the exceptional talent encapsulated in a single individual. It stands as a testament to the boundless possibilities when creative brilliance converges in the hands of a singular, multifaceted visionary.
