I'm not a huge Masters of the Universe fan, but I like it well enough. I heard about this movie and thought, "Ah, what the heck. I'll give it a try." The result was not one to my liking. But first lets go on with the summary.
Malik is the Wizard of Stone Mountain. He is steward of a small village that has been seized with a terrible plague. He goes to King Randor in the castle of Eternos for help. Little do they know that this plague is all part of an evil plan by a demon named Locus, who is in fact working for Skeletor and "Evil Itself." Malik is in search of a cure, and eventually has to turn to the Spirit of Darkness (Locus) for help.
I think this was based off of an episode of the show, but just the one. Honestly it's cool that they tried to do an original story, but it really didn't work out. It's kind of slow, but it's biggest problem is that it doesn't feel very He-Man/Masters of the Universe-like.
THE GOOD -The costumes look very good. They looked better than the costumes in Hero of Time. -They tried to create an original story. Props! -Makeup looked great too, especially the blisters/sores on the plagued people. -They have an original soundtrack! -Their Skeletor is freaking awesome! He looked great. -Some good acting from Randor, Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, and Prince Adam. -They made a live-action, feature length, He-Man movie!
THE BAD -They try to speak with an old-timey motif, but it sometimes comes off as cheesy. -Some not so great acting (but that's to be expected in a fan film). -When Locus is meeting with Malik, sometimes he talks extremely quiet and was hard to hear. -The soundtrack (though original) is just okay. Not bad, just meh. Not nearly as good as the original soundtrack from Hero of Time. -All your favorite characters from the show are completely undermined and screwed over on screen time. Evil-Lyn and the rest of Skeletor's minions are in there for two scenes. Skeletor gets ONE FREAKING SCENE AT THE END OF THE MOVIE! Man-At-Arms and Meckaneck are only mentioned. But worst of all, Prince Adam is in there for I think five scenes, AND HE-MAN ISN'T IN THERE AT ALL! -He-Man is a sci-fi/fantasy crossover. This movie, however, is not. The only science fiction in here are the three shots of multiple planets in a skyline and a dude wearing sunglasses.
Sorry, I've been a little cruel. Getting a bunch of people together to make a movie (with no money) is extremely difficult, and I commend them for making a feature length He-Man movie. This is the ultimate show of fandom and patronage to something you love.
I guess my problem was I was expecting a movie more closely associated to He-Man, Skeletor, etc. If you're willing to see a movie less associated with the main He-Man characters, then by all means see it.
It's pretty okay. I lower my expectations and go open-minded into all independent/fan-films, and as such the rating is more lenient as well. On a fan film scale, I give it a 5/10. It's alright, give it a try if you are He-Man fan and you REALLY want to see a live action movie.
P.S. - The sequel, Masters of the Universe: The Fountain of Life, will actually have He-Man in it, so I'll be sure to see that one too.
The film is different to He-Man and it is a new story for Eternia and the Masters of the Universe. Due to this the film can be watched by He- Man and non He-Man fans.
Some people seem to have given this low reviews due to He-Man not beating the hell out of Skelletor for 22 minutes which happens in every episode of Masters of the Universe but hey things change.
