Danish dark comedy can be quite grotesque. If you're not familiar with, or a fan of Anders Thomas Jensen's other work, there's a good chance that you're going to find this movie unpleasantly bizarre.
If you are a fan of Anders Thomas Jensen, however, I am pleased to tell you that this is one of his best movies yet.

I was in the theater with one other person, which isn't unusual in the small city I live in, but at least that other person laughed quite a bit. I didn't really find this funny.
It's a story of twin brothers: Anker and Manfred (call him John). Anker is a criminal who has just been released from prison and is now looking to find his half of the loot. However, it was up to his brother John to hide it and he is not forthcoming about this. Meanwhile, Anker's former partner wants the other half as well to cover his debts and he is a very violent person.
It's a decent movie. Individual parts are pretty good, but they don't fit together that well, although explaining the reasons goes into the spoiler territory, so I'll try to avoid that.
I like the character, and I like the performances, even if the movie tries to balance way too many of them, which is probably why the movie is so long as well. Keep comedies tight.
However, this is trying to be a comedy, except that the childhood of the brothers was pure hell and we still see a lot of it. It just yanks you out of the mood to find anything funny, when you witness kids being punished quite brutally.
Many of the plot points are quite obvious from a mile away.
There is an element of John's condition that I'm not sure about. He is given a diagnosis which is highly controversial and pretty much exists only in movies, but there kind of is an in movie explanation for it as well. It just felt weird to me.
It's a decent movie. Not especially good, but I had a good time. Most of the time.

I just watched "Den Sidste Viking" (The Last Viking) - and honestly, it's one of the funniest Danish films I've seen in many, many years. I can't recommend it enough! It's a perfect example of dark Danish humor done right - sharp, clever, and completely unapologetic. 😂
From start to finish, the film delivers a steady stream of laughs, awkward moments, and those classic, dry one-liners that only Danish comedies seem to master. It's not just silly - it's smart, too. Beneath all the absurdity and dark jokes, there's actually a well-told story with characters you can't help but relate to, even when they're completely ridiculous.
What really stands out is how authentically Danish it feels. The humor is so local - the kind of wit and irony that plays with everyday struggles, small-town life, and the quirks of being Danish in a modern world that doesn't always make sense. It pokes fun at traditions, masculinity, and the idea of heroism in a way that's both heartfelt and hilarious.
If you enjoy films that balance dark comedy with genuine storytelling, this one's a must-watch. It reminded me a bit of classics like De Grønne Slagtere or Adams Æbler - movies that mix absurd humor with real emotion and cultural satire.
"Den Sidste Viking" is packed with memorable moments - scenes that make you laugh out loud one second and shake your head in disbelief the next. It's brave, original, and refreshingly different from most modern comedies.
In short, it's not just a funny movie - it's a celebration of that uniquely Danish way of laughing at life, even when it's messy or dark. If you love black comedy, great characters, and a bold sense of humor, go watch it.
A big recommendation from me - pure entertainment and high-quality Danish humor at its best!

This is an absolute gem of a movie!!
It was so funny that tears streamed down my face! It is sarcastic, brutal, touching and absolutely crazy. The characters are so well performed and it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The whole cinema was roaring with laughter and the 2 hours were gone with the blink of an eye.
Just watch it!!

Totally fun dark movie. People who doesn't find this movie fun and touching have personal issues. Mads is phenomenal in this movie and have a fantastic chemistry with Nikolaj Lie Kaas.
This film has a unique tone that blends darkness with humor in a brilliant way. It explores serious themes with honesty and depth, yet never loses its sense of playfulness. The humor is sharp, sometimes even a bit twisted, but it fits perfectly with the atmosphere. The darker moments give the story weight, making the emotional scenes feel real and powerful. At the same time, the film has a warmth that makes you care deeply about the characters. It's the kind of story that makes you laugh one moment and reflect the next. It's not loud or flashy - it's clever, heartfelt, and beautifully crafted. A film that stays with you long after it ends.

In the movie, there is a significant amount of unnecessary violence, with multiple scenes showing adults hitting kids repeatedly and with little provocation. This portrayal of aggressive behavior feels excessive and disturbing, especially for younger viewers. It is worth noting that this movie stands out as being particularly intense and harsh compared to other films within the same category, even those featuring the same actors. The overall tone is much darker, and the approach to conflict is far more physical and unsettling than what you might typically expect from similar movies.
Due to the high levels of violence and the way it is depicted-often without clear moral consequences-this film is definitely not suitable for children or for families hoping to watch together. I strongly recommend that you do not watch this film with children under the age of 15.

A great danish dark comedy with interesting and funny characters, amazing acting, well-written dialogue, and an original captivating story. At the same time there is depth and nuance to the film. Thomas manages to deliver a critique to the current flawed ways of thinking in modern society, and does so elegantly through absurdity and dark humour.

Den Sidste Viking Is the story about family, and how a man want he weird brother, to tell him where he hidden the loot.
Anders Thomas Jensen Knows, what story he wants to tell, and he is very good at it at this point.
Story about people who are outsiders of society, and people with diagnoses who doesn't fit in to normal Society. And does it with black comedy and heartfelt moments.
The movie was for me very funny, but it just hit the perfect tone shifting ability, so it never felt jarring.
The actors to a great job, and especially Mads Mikkelsen who plays, a neurodivergent person very well and with humanity.
The story is great and a lot of fun. There's only one twist that put a little bad taste in my mouth, but the movie is still good.
I left the movie theater with a lot of facts, about IKEA and the Holocaust. It a great time would recommend.

With open arms and singing and all that is necessary. So no pun intended - the movie is from Denmark and it is able to mix comedy and violence quite ... well I would argue perfectly. I understand if for some (more sensible and sensitive souls) this feels wrong ... especially considering that the movie does not take any prisoners (though it does literally in one case with one individual and she is treated quite harshly to say the least).
The main character (next to Mads Mikkelsen) is ... quite annoying ... especially his insistence on not giving in and just accepting his brother ... but this also leads to a lot of comedic moments. Again you have to suspend your disbelief and just allow them to make "mistakes".
The movie is inventive enough to be enjoyable ... there may be some lines crossed .. actually not just maybe ... they are crossed! Be aware and don't be offended .. or rather do not watch if you know you can't deal with this being as dark humored as possible ... that makes it different ... and unique (and I would argue good, but that is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?).
Great performances, great twists and dialog ... and just as mad(s) as it can get ...

I am seriously not sure if Anders Thomas Jensen (writer and instructor) has been substituted with an AI language model recently! To me this movie is a boil-up of many of the previous movies written and instructed by ATJ (many of which I love!). This movie is far too violent for me and the plot even more wacky than "Mænd og høns" or "Adams æbler". Come to think of it, what has really carried the weight of many of the best movies by ATJ is Ole Thestrup, who has sadly passed away some years ago. I had high expectations (which is always dangerous) prior to watching this movie, but I really don't find it particularly good.

Anders Thomas Jensen is ny favorit danish director, and here again with he starfilled cast, i had high expectations, but I felt like it was a complete waste of time, it tried to do what his holder movies did but failed miserabley, a enormous dissapointment.
It was actually sad to see Kaas and Mikkelsen be a part of this garbage.
