From the trailer, i thought it was going to take the campy and syrupy route, but so glad it didn't. Boots starts off with a closeted gay guy joining the marines with his straight best friend ... and thats all you need to know. The show doesn't just focus on how the lead actor struggles in the marine because of his sexuality, it also shows racism, and any kind of discrimination that fits the model of being a 'Man'... From a young age, your peers tell you how a 'Man' should act, be straight, brave, strong, etc. Life is short, live how you want and feel... Even the most confident guy, will have something they find that is not man enuff about themselves. Thats why the show is truly relatable for all guys. The show strikes a great balance of drama and lightheartedness so the more darker moments don't put you off. The cast is made up of relatively unknown actors, apart from Vera Farmiga (truly supporting in spirit), but they are all likeable and can act. In essence it's an LGBTQ themed show without having to rely too much on the sexual aspect of things, which many shows do nowadays. It is also a show for people who have felt like an outsider and felt the only way to fit in ... is to change ... but is that true? One of Netflix's better shows of late....

It is rough around the edges. But the ending, the build up, the story, the acting, the direction - It is simply brilliant.
I'll admit on 3rd episode, I wouldn't even think where it'll end up on 8th. The characters in this story grew so much. Totally binge worthy if you have a open mind and a warm heart.
Coming of age stories are always predictable, but there are some sharp U turns here. But that made Sullivan's character progression a bit weird. It could have been told in a different way. But mostly no other complaints. I would not change anything.
It's all a bit messy, but disciplined and somehow it just works. Highly recomended.

I had friends who went into the Marines, and a lot of the brutality, harsh training, and name-calling you see in this show is accurate-at least back in the '90s. From what I understand, the storyline draws from the book The Pink Marine, which took place a decade earlier.
That said, Boots is absolutely binge-worthy. If you're overly sensitive or homophobic, this probably isn't the show for you-so don't watch it and then leave a bad review. These are real situations that gay men endured in the military for years. Personally, I see nothing wrong with anyone who wants to fight and even die for our country, no matter who they are.
First of all, if you're old-school, stuck in a patriarchal mindset, you're probably not going to like the female lead character or the staff sergeant. Both are minorities, and the story also centers on three gay male characters. That diversity is exactly what gives the show its depth and power, forcing viewers to confront realities that were ignored or silenced for too long.
One of my favorite lines in the series comes from the staff sergeant:
> "One of my men had to be on double duty because the higher-ups had to investigate who's putting what in who. The man won a Silver Star for god's sake-who cares?" That's pure poetry.
The character buildup is excellent, showing how people can bond in the most difficult, testosterone-charged, macho environments. There's also a lot of humor woven in. Yes, some parts are fictionalized for dramatic effect, but it's still a powerful story that makes you care about the characters while taking you through laughter, tension, and raw emotion.
And in case you're wondering-yes, the lead actor looked familiar. He played Alex in 13 Reasons Why.

Boots is a refreshing addition to Netflix's lineup, offering a unique comedic drama set against the backdrop of the 1990s US Marine Corps. The series follows Cameron Cope, a bullied gay teen portrayed by Miles Heizer, who, alongside his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), joins the Marine Corps. This decision leads them into boot camp, where they not only face the physical challenges of military training but also navigate the tumultuous landscape of their identities during a time when being gay in the military was illegal.
Each episode skillfully balances humor with heartfelt moments, creating an engaging narrative that explores themes of friendship, resilience, and self-discovery. The dynamic between Cameron and Ray is a highlight, showcasing their unwavering support for each other as they confront both external pressures and their inner struggles. The ensemble cast brings a diverse range of characters to life, each adding layers to the story as they bond over shared experiences and challenges.
It also does an excellent job of tackling serious issues while maintaining a lighthearted tone. The sharp wit and irreverent humor make it accessible, even as it addresses the harsh realities of military life and the struggles of being a closeted LGBTQ+ individual. The writing is clever, often using comedy as a vehicle to discuss deeper themes, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Visually, the series captures the gritty yet vibrant atmosphere of the 90s military experience, enhancing the storytelling with nostalgic touches. The pacing is brisk, keeping viewers engaged as the characters evolve through their trials and tribulations.
Overall, it is a great coming-of-age story that resonates with anyone who has ever felt like an outsider. It's a bold exploration of identity and belonging, wrapped in humor and camaraderie, making it a must-watch for those seeking a heartfelt and relatable narrative.

From the trailers I didnt have much interest in this, but thought id give it a go. Its a great comedy drama. So glad I gave it a try. As a 'gay' tv programme it's completely refreshing. No stereotypes (so far anyway), and sexuality isnt the sole (or even main) focus. It's about character, and the characters are all well written and acted with good backstories, some funny lines and some more serious/ touching moments too.

Everyone can relate to the plot points of this show. There are no over the top sexual encounters, that might make some people uncomfortable. In this day and age, it's actually quite tame in that regard, whether it's an LGBTQ+ show or a heterosexual show.
Yes, the main character's insecurity, and obstacle, is about his sexuality, but this show is about so much more. It includes many insecurities that young people carry into adulthood, such as fat shaming, racism, juvenile delinquency, and more.
This show brilliantly watches these "Boys" overcome these insecurities, and become confident young men, through the experiences of boot camp.
The writers, producers, show runners, etc have done a wonderful job of recreating this experience, through each episode. The fact that this show had delay after delay, I'm so happy that this story has finally been told!
The young actors are brilliant, some having very little experience in acting prior to production.
If you do love this show, I highly recommend that you read The Pink Marine, to know the man behind the series, Greg Cope White! The rest of his story is just as impressive as this, the first chapter of his adult life!
My favorite part of both the show, and the book, is the friendship between Greg and Dale (Cameron and Ray), that lasts to this day. It took courage for Dale, a straight, popular teen, to be Greg's best friend, knowing he was gay, in the 1970's!
I can't wait to see where season 2 takes these young Marines.

Netflix show 'Boots' based on the novel 'The Pink Marine' by Greg Cope White, is one of the best TV series I've watched in a very long time.
Yes, it's based on a gay marine, but it's much more than that. Based in 1990, It's a mix of camaraderie, drama, comedy, suspense, all whilst trying to navigate who you are, regardless of skin colour, ethnicity, sexuality (although, it was illegal to be gay in the Marines)
It was absolutely brilliant that I'm contemplating giving it a second watch tomorrow having only finished it tonight.
10/10.

Binge worthy, funny, insightful, incredible. Norman Lear had an idea with this one: entertain and tell a story. Semper Fi. A true coming of age story.
Mark my words: This series will mark a significant turning point in Max Parker's career. As an English actor, he's not well known in the U. S yet but his performance in this series is definitely award worthy.

This is a stellar show. There were so many interesting backstories in this. It was a bit campy, but great storytelling, character development, and energy. I actually enjoyed the internal monologue of the main character. I loved the main character in Parenthood, so I knew he would be decent, but the secondary characters were amazingly acted. I don't usually do this but I loved the series so much that I bought the book that it was based from.

Amazing show.
We binged watch this show because after one episode you have to carry on to see what happens next.
Brutal and honest television show, as it shows you a side of the marines we didn't know.
Some funny moments and some heartbreaking moments.
Hopefully a second season
So i seen the show now onto the book.

It felt pretty like Hollywood took abit to much into it in butwith my great grandfather he enlisted and was first of the boat in Dunkirk. It had a visibility good vibe about it and the show could or added alot more to make the story come alive but. All in all I thought series did good and hope to seee a season 2.

Although some people who've been in the military seem to dislike the movie, l find the arguments made against it are weak. "There's too much dialogue", "the recruits are talking and cheering". It's not supposed to be accurate. It's drama, there has to be some chatter. Overall l found it entertaining and the acting & script weren't too bad either - a rare thing these days.

Im a Marine. I went to boot camp in 1995. While some of what you 'see' is true; what you isnt. There is way too much talking between recruits and drill instructors. Episode #1... recruits would never cheer on another recruit to do a pull up or scream or cheer. We didnt helpneach other shave we didn't have time. We had to move so fast that you never really got a chance to actually meet and know the recruits you were in boot camp with. We knew their last names and that was it. While I encourage movies of military experience I at least expect accuracy I. That depiction.
Not one Marine Drill Insteuctor would ever say god damn. Its always Dog Gawn.

I truly believe he's the finest actor television has to offer today.
And I sincerely hope we'll get to see him in many more masterpieces (and films) in the future.
Boots is one of those rare series that manage to reach the deepest part of the human experience where fear meets transformation and turn it into a story of true growth.
It's not just about the Marine Corps, it's about believing in the process of becoming, about being reborn through weakness, and discovering that strength isn't the absence of fear, but the decision to keep going despite it.
The show balances raw realism with tender humanity. The dynamic between Sullivan and Cameron unfolds in layers of emotion, power, shame, compassion, and a mutual understanding between two people fighting the same silent battle.. the desire to be genuine in a world that demands you hide..

I loved this and now I'm sad that I binged it and have no episodes left! I watched this with my dad who was in the Marines and we had a great time watching this together. Not everything is super accurate, but it was a great watch. I went through so many emotions while watching this show- I laughed a lot and cried at times too. The acting was phenomenal from the entire cast. When I saw the trailer for this show I just knew I had to watch this with my dad and he loved it too. It made him reminisce about what boot camp was like for him, and the things that were similar and different.
I would highly recommend watching this show.

While this is based on a book by a gay man who joined the marines in 1990 when homosexuality was a crime in the military, this ultimately is not about being gay. It's about the brotherhood and overcoming your demons and ultimately growth. The whole boot camp process also feels authentic unlike the testosterone driven movies Hollywood makes. It still manages to create personalities that allow anyone to find someone relatable, and the whole series moves at an even pace without the typical long boring speeches about childhood. We get all the backstories in small bits and pieces while the series remains focus on boot camp and showing us who the characters are and their personalities through the process. The casting is brilliant including Mike Heizer, who doesn't try to play either end of the spectrum of being gay, Liam Oh, Max Parker, and Ana Ayora. This is how casting should be done and it's refreshing with so much lazy casting.

This show, while certainly dramatized, captures the emotional intensity and disorientation of arriving at boot camp with remarkable accuracy. From the moment recruits step off the bus, they're immediately thrust into an environment of "hurry up, shut up, get in line, and do as you're told." No amount of preparation can truly ready someone for that first day when individuality is stripped away and you're expected to perform at your absolute best 24/7 for months on end.
The portrayal of the drill instructors is spot-on from the in-your-face approach, constant yelling, running, and belittling. It isn't rooted in genuine disdain. It's a method designed to break down complacency and instill the mindset that there's always room for improvement. While certain elements of the show are exaggerated (for example, letting recruits drink), that creative license keeps the story engaging. Trust me, an accurate depiction would be kind of boring.
My father, who went through boot camp in the late 1980s, loved that they included silly pranks since that sort of thing did happen back then! Him and his buddies snuck out and ordered pizza and got caught when he was at boot camp. Watching it together, he couldn't help but laugh at the nostalgia and ridiculousness of those moments.
I also appreciated the way the show handled the main character's struggle with his sexual identity. It was portrayed with restraint and emotional depth, avoiding the over-sexualization that many shows fall into. I don't much enjoy watching any show, straight or gay characters, with over the top sexuality when it doesn't fit the rest of the show. While a few of the inner monologue scenes leaned a bit cheesy, overall, I found the show authentic, emotionally resonant, and worth recommending.

I wasn't expecting this but after binge watching all episodes I was hooked! Great job on all the actors!
Amazing cast, great storyline and it simply got me hooked to it right from the start.
The show puts a focus on a lot of aspects on becoming a marine but also has a great balance between drama, action and story telling. Definitely wanting a season 2!

I really liked this - great entertainment. Good characters, serious bits, funny bits, a good story. I cared about the main characters and what happened to them. Thought the acting was excellent too. I have no idea if it is an accurate representation of marine training, and actually don't care. It is just a great, entertaining watch. Just accept it for what it is. I didn't think the gay issue especially dominated or was even the main focus. All of the main characters had their own stuff and back stories. The whole thing was uplifting.

Fantastic! Boots is highly enjoyable, and kept me amused till the last seconds. I freaking loved it, it is fun, witty, touching, hot and powerful. The creators just killed it! The characters are realisticly- and diversely-built and their development really had me. The plot is simple yet full of twists and extremely fun. All the dialogues are super quotable. I loved how the roughness of the boot camp was presented, making it baffingly surprising when a bit of tenderness was shown. Amazing. OORAH.

When IMDB suggested this to me, I was skeptical. I'm not your typical audience for a military dramedy, but that's just a small part of what this show is about. The characters are endearing, the plot draws you in, and the acting is top notch. I dedicated my entire day off to binging it, and that's saying something for me. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Decent enough but way too much emphasis on the recruits socializing but at the same time, just gaping holes of time where major things aren't addressed at all.
Diary boy writes a lot of sht about his fellow recruits, ZERO backlash, 2 or 3 or 4 episodes later he's apologizing at the most random moment that is WEEKS past when it happened.
That would've been dealt with that night.
Sullivan's story has ZERO resolution. It isn't like this was based on a currently unfolding story and rushed to the screen, they could have finished it up, even if it was a post script note on the screen.
It's worth a single watch and then forget it, there are so many better military series out there.

For crying out loud, isn't so freaking difficult to make such good, simple, heartfelt and funny stories like this one?
It isn't!
It's just about not rushing the process and letting scripts evolve, and having producers that give scripts like these a green light, and thank God they do, because these stories matter!
If this show doesn't win most of the awards in the next awards season, I'm closing up shop.
